From Twitter: "Chris Level of RedRaidersports.com reports Art Briles @ Baylor will hire ex-SMU head man & Pitt,OU & K-St. DC Phil Bennett as new DC n Waco"

"Mack hires Manny Diaz to coach his defense and Briles will answer by hiring Phil Bennett to help coach his. Announcement Fri. #Texas #Baylor"

Yeah, I don't really want him in our backyard fighting over players we want to get. Pretty much the last place I would want him to land.

Not sure why you say that. He didn't exactly light up the recruiting trail while here, and he was a failure as a head coach. Anyway, if he gets uppity Klemm will just flash some superbowl rings around.

Mostly because he was the head coach here for five years and knows every little dirty thing about the football program and athletic department. Sure, some things have changed, but he's only 75 miles away sitting on I-35 going after a number of recruits we'll be going after.

What kind of schemes should we expect? Talking to some of my smu friends they said many of his struggles at SMU had to do with the admin not admitting recruits with borderline grades which lowered the overall talent level he had to work with.

Well he did lay an egg in 2003 going 0-12. That, ahem, put a bit of a damper on recruiting momentum. Not sure if you can attribute it to bad talent evaluation, but a lot of his more highly ranked recruits didn't amount to anything, at all, ever on the field. He also placed a high focus on a 300 mile radius, really liked East Texas for recruiting, and really didn't ever take a shot at the top ranked talent in Texas.

Having said that, he certainly wasn't operating under the same guidelines that Jones is

Watch for the revolutionary and innovative "Defensive Swinging Gate" scheme. Designed to confuse and unbalance every offense that encounters it.

He made a lot of bonehead game decisions. He's just not a head coach.

I'm sure Stallion will point out that Bennett is big on recruiting JUCOs, which is unusually difficult at SMU in addition to the normal academic restrictions that you know about that Bennett struggled with.

One thing though - I hope your practice field isn't located across the street from a church playground. Bennett's profanities and blasphemies could shock sailor.

As long as he isn't whizzing all over bar counters, I'm sure Baylor will be okay with it.

Baylor's Defense was awful last year, despite having some quickness and speed. And we know that Baylor pretty much admits anyone for sports, just ask Doh about that. So, he can't do any worse. With Briles running the offense and Bennett running the defense, look for Baylor to make the Cult and the Whorns worry. Wouldn't surprise me to see the NCAA investigators camping out in Waco next year for that very reason. When UT worries, the NCAA follows.

This adds intrigue to the 2012 matchup with Baylor in Waco.

PB always seemed lost as a head coach, but he is a great defensive mind and will do well there.

lots of man coverages with a heavy load of blitzing. works well if you have corners who can man up... if not this is what you can expect
