A Hewitt has been running the Rams' equipment department for 43 years. But that association ended Friday morning when Todd Hewitt learned he was not being retained as the team's equipment manager.
Hewitt began helping his father, the late Don Hewitt, in the Rams' equipment department at age 11 in 1967. He became a fulltime Rams employee in 1978 and took over from his father as equipment manager in 1995 when the Rams moved from southern California to St. Louis.
Hewitt's contract is about to expire. Hewitt declined comment Friday morning. But his thoughts in 2007 following his father's death also summed up his feelings about working with the Rams.
"My dad always felt that it wasn't a job but a way of life," Hewitt said. "Dad did it with dedication and passion. To him the Rams family was an extension of his family."
On Thursday, the Rams informed assistant strength coach Chuck Faucette that his contract would not be retained.
"We have decided not to retain Todd Hewitt and Chuck Faucette going forward in 2011," coach Steve Spagnuolo said in a statement. "We appreciate their efforts in the past and wish them well in the future."
Spagnuolo declined further comment.
