From footballscoop.com, quoting an ESPN writer

“I wanted a commitment. I wanted to know how serious they were about getting better. I looked at the top pay of the coordinators and said ‘Hey, look, none of them have more experience than I do. I'll put my résumé against anybody.’ I said, ‘If we're going to do this, let's pay like it.’ It was a little variation from what they had to what I wanted, the number of years. I said, ‘I plan on this being my last job. Let's make this work.’ I talked about the staff, that I had to have control of the staff, who I'm going to be working with. He said, ‘Phil, we will get this done.’ I told him when he got it done to call me. “I was a little bit shocked. He wasn't gone 10 minutes. On the way to the airport he says, ‘It's done.’ I said, ‘I'm in.’ That's how it went down.”

“I asked for a much larger salary and extended years and not a lot of assistant coaches get that. I'm going to have the final say on all the players -- all the defensive players we take.”

In his interview, do you think he bragged about how much football he had forgotten?

I hope he decides to revolutionize defense by implementing the new swinging gate defense.

Didn't Oregon use the swinging gate in the NC game and got a 2-point play from it? And everybody is calling Chip Kelly a brilliant offense mind.

Perception is reality.

Since this all came down last week, I checked out the 2010 Big 12 defensive stats and Baylor was at or near the bottom in just about every team category. So you have the perfect storm here. Bennett has a track record of being a good DC and Baylor was horrible and needed to get better on that side of the ball.

Art Briles knows that. Bennett is a Texan. There's a coaching change at Pittsburgh. Briles comes to him because he believes the Bears can be a better program and compete for the Big 12 title with a better defense because the offense is there. Bennett is holding the cards here because if he wasn't going to Waco, he was going somewhere else.

If you're Baylor, what are you going to do? These things are about timing.

Once Baylor gets whatever it needs for players, Bennett will develop them. He'll challenge them. He may swear at them but whatever...

Again, I'm not going to apologize for supporting Phil. I liked him, but I also called for his dismissal in 2007. He showed at Pitt he was solid in his work.

Good move by Baylor.
