Entering the 2009 season, cornerback Derrius Bell was one of the key members of the SMU defense. Two concussions later, his playing days were behind him.

But Bell is not done on the football field. After his concussions, he began considering a career in coaching, an idea he discussed with SMU defensive coordinator Tom Mason. Bell will be back on the practice field this spring with his former teammates, "getting his feet wet in coaching." Bell visited with PonyFans.com to discuss his emotions while watching his former teammates play the 2010 season without him, and how he expects to impact the SMU secondary without putting on a helmet or pads.

Enjoy!

Good for him. This is the route that I took when I as injured and it was very rewarding. I am excited to have him back on the field and more excited to know that he will be safe in doing so.

We will miss seeing Bell play on the field with his head hunter tendencies, but great choice for him and Mason will take him under his wing and teach him the ropes. That is so cool he will get his degree and stay on campus recruiting and coaching DB's in the near future. He is a true Mustang!
