EDMONTON - Edmonton Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed has rounded out his coaching staff with the hiring of Dennis McKnight, who will oversee the running backs.

McKnight, who spent the last two seasons as special teams coach with the Southern Methodist University Mustangs, has 12 years of coaching experience. Prior to joining the SMU staff, initially as an offensive line coach in 2008, McKnight served two stints with the University of Hawaii.

Having spent 11 years in the National Football League as an offensive lineman, McKnight also served as a special teams coach at Grossmont College and tight ends coach at San Diego State.

He spent his NFL playing career mainly with the San Diego Chargers (eight seasons) and also had brief stints with the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles. As a member of the Chargers, McKnight was an alternate for the Pro Bowl in 1988.

With our coaching connections, I think we'll get a suitable (if not greatly improved) replacement pretty soon.

Best of luck, coach, you sure were LOUD!

This isn't that big of a loss.
Especially considering the thorn in the side special teams was this season.
I hope everyone remembers that midseason the best option on punt returns, seemingly, was to have no return man at all and just let the ball bounce around.

Chad Owens would be the perfect fit for your special teams coach. He's young and knows special teams play. If JJ wanted someone who could probably recruit the islands, he's the perfect guy.

Not sure if he's done playing yet and has a try out with an NFL team this spring after winning the CFL special teams player of the year.

Does anyone know if McKnight left on his own free will? Or was he kind of forced out by JJ?

I know he screamed like a baby when JJ moved him from the OL to special teams.
That was the first step to the door more than likely.
