Ran into left tackle Kelvin Beachum, Jr., Tuesday, and asked him about the rumor that he is up to about 310 pounds (from the 298 listed on the SMU website).

Beachum said it's true, meaning he has put on nearly 70 pounds since he arrived at SMU as a freshman who weighed somewhere in the low 240s.

"I've done it the right way," Beachum said, "eating right, lifting consistently. It's been gradual."

Beachum said he is not concerned about the warmer spring and summer months, during which many players who gain weight often end up dropping the pounds they added to improve their performance by running in the summer heat.

"I'm not too worried about that," the firs-team All-Conference USA honoree said. "It's not bad weight, it's not fat. It's pretty solid. I should hold it OK."

I have no problem holding my weight regardless of the time of year. I can even increase it at any time.

Yeah. I think the point is holding it while running in the summer heat. Running. That's the key component you are missing

Glad to hear that he is well and that big. What a key part of our line. Plus he seemed like a good guy. He gave me a call as part of the "thank you calls" put out by the athletes. A very courteous young man. Go Ponies!

I remember what he looked like as a freshman, and if he's up over 310, that's a real tribute to Vic Viloria and Mel de Laura. That's a lot of weight to put on, even for a guy growing into his frame as most college players do. If he can hold it will running in the summer heat, then it really is "good weight." Like any player, I'm sure he can stand to get stronger, but when I have gotten a chance to see him, he has looked like a hell of a player.
