JOEY FONTANA: On the mend again

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Joey Fontana is recovering from another surgical procedure, and has his eyes set on another rehab process he hopes is another step in his effort to return to the playing field.

Fontana has had multiple surgeries since tearing up his knee in one of the Mustangs' last practices before last year's Hawaii Bowl. Fontana underwent his third operation Jan. 25, this time to help increase muscle and ligament control in his left ankle.

Fontana said his doctors told him the procedure went well, and he had about 50 stitches removed from seven incisions in his ankle Feb. 11.

Fontana now is wearing a cast on his left leg, and is getting around thanks to crutches. He said he is expected to have his cast removed March 7, and begin rehab the next day.

The New Orleans native has lost weight during his previous rehab stints, and sounded somewhat remorseful when he acknowledged that instead of going home for spring break, he'll stay in Dallas to work on his rehab ... although, in an effort to get a taste of home, he will order a Mardi Gras-style King's Cake on which he'll snack between stints on the treadmill.
