One of the best-kept secrets down the stretch of the 2010 season was the severity of the ankle injury SMU quarterback Kyle Padron suffered during the Ponies' overtime win at East Carolina. Padron visited with PonyFans.com to discuss the diagnosis, how it has affected his offseason workouts and his expectations for spring workouts.

Enjoy!

Missing spring ball would have been bad. Glad he's gonna be fine without surgery.

To say this is a major story would be an understatement. Good job, PP
We've got to have Kyle healthy!

With all due respect to the coaches.....how do you not have a wildcat qb, especially when you have your starter playing hurt! Would have sure been nice to have Jeremy Johnson(one of the best dual threat qb's in Texas as a high school sr) running that option play instead of an injured Kyle against Army on 4th and 1 and not getting the first down. Those old-time coaches can sure be stubborn.

Well, you know how it is when the game has passed them by, lol.

I hope your ankle feels better soon and heals quickly, Kyle!

Thanks, PP, for keeping us up to date on the team. Can't wait for spring ball.

This could be a long term problem for Padron. Hope not. That injury certainly hindered him in the last three games and it was too bad that people criticised him. He may be too tough for his own good.

It's imperative that this does NOT become a long-term deal. Padron absolutely has to be healthy next year.

Wow, with all three QBs having health issues it is a good thing Preston is here for spring.
 :?

It is interesting that the health issues that plagued our Qbs in 2010 were kept somewhat secret. It is a bit of a commentary about JJ. He is not a complainer. Of course it makes sense to keep secret that both available Qbs are nicked up.

Was it really being kept secret? Seems to me it's the offseason, and PP is the only one out there covering the team and following up on things. Again. But you're right about the benefit of having Preston on campus. Steve Spurrier, who knows a thing or two about QBs and about winning a lot of games, has always said teams should have at least one quarterback with the talent to play, if needed, in every class. He lost some QBs to transfers when they got frustrated with their spot on the depth chart, but he always carried at least 4 competent QBs, and often 5. Looks like we're trying to do the same.

I agree that Preston's arrival could prove to be a stroke of genius by Coach Jones and Coach Morrison, or whoever suggested his early graduation from HS. Because of the delicate nature of back injuries, I would say McDermott's future is unknown, at best. Having at least three quarterbacks is mandatory. Hopefully we'll sign at least one, maybe two in 2012.
