Eric Dickerson is on the new ballot to be a member of the College football Hall of Fame. Better late than never. I wonder if Pony Excess helped remind the committee what a great college player he was.

Isn't he always on the ballot and they just continuously screw him over by not selecting him year after year after year?

Really, this is unbelievable. One of the biggest snubs ever. That's good news.

This is what I was thinking.

I must say once again I take issue with Pete Fiutak and his rankings; he has Dickerson listed as 5th most deserving on the list of 79 behind Brian Bosworth, Teddy Bruschi, and Tommie Frazier. Of course, he is the one who wrote an entire column reducing the Pony Express days to being "The Boise State of the 1980's" which is such a frightfully stupid analogy it makes your head shut down thinking about it.

This like many other things are based either on politics or money or both. Pretty hard for our man to get elected if his own school basically disowned him until our current AD showed up. Combine that with June's influence and he will finally get the push that is needed. BTW--Brian Bosworth was the most overated player ever to play in this part of the country.

The SMU teams of the early 80's would have butt pummeled modern day Boise.

I am still mad that ED was not awarded the Heisman his senior year!

What's the punchline?

Somehow "butt pummeled" shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as a team that plays on a field sometimes referred to as the "Smurf turf."

I rescind this question... I misread your comment as "would have been butt-pummeled by". Carry on...

The hype on Herschel Walker was too much to overcome. Dickerson, however, was a far better player who had more moves and carried his team (SMU) far more than Herschel did. Without the Georgia hype, Eric would have won in a landslide!

Amen. Other than Walker, sportswriters and broadcasters did not think another RB existed in college football that year.

First of all I agree that ED has been treated poorly by the HOF selection people.

With reference to the Heisman though, one comment heard at the time was that if you had two candidates you could pretty well forget either of them winning. Had Dickerson and James been in diffferent programs or different years both might have had more support. Another story heard at the time was that James almost transferred to Alabama where Bear Bryant would have made him the showcase back after a red shirt year.
