While many of his friends and teammates were taking "traditional" spring break trips, SMU left tackle Kelvin Beachum, Jr., joined one of his classes on a bus tour of the sites of some of the biggest events in the Civil Rights movement. The trip had a significant impact on Beachum, who visited with PonyFans.com to discuss why the trip made such an impression on him, where they went and who he met, and how he expects the trip to affect him going forward. Enjoy! Webmasters PonyFans.com http://www.ponyfans.com/features/index.php?id=263

Good job PP and a very nice story. Kelvin is an impressive young man. Glad he is at SMU.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

What a great kid. Great story and a true testimony on the kind of impact June Jones and his staff are having on this university off the field. We are so lucky to have kids like Beach and a head coach like June Jones. Says volumes about SMU.
Back off Warchild seriously.

A wise young man. We can expect big things from him and not just on the field.

What a powerful story.
Kelvin has started since his freshman year, right? There was some talk of him actually leaving school early for the NFL draft, and now that he is coming back, he is universally looked at as a legit NFL prospect of some kind. After reading about him getting the M Award and then this story about his thoughts and perspective on this trip, I could see him playing in the NFL for a dozen years ... and having his football ability being the least impressive thing about him.
Print up a #70 jersey and I'll buy one today.

No, redshifted and we went 1-11 according to the story.

Great story, PP.
I never realized how much Beach was involved beyond football! Great example for anyone, not just our student athletes.

Right — that's what I meant. After redshirting, he started as a redshirt freshman, and ever since. How can you not root for this guy? He sounds like an amazing young man.
