For the second time this spring, a starting SMU defensive end has undergone surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. Taylor Thompson, who finished second on the SMU defense last year with 4.5 sacks and earned first-team all-conference honors, visited with PonyFans.com to discuss his role at spring workouts during his recovery, his biggest conditioning concerns and when he expects to be cleared to return to all football-related activities.

Enjoy!

Szymon Czerniak, Beau Barnes, Marquis Frazier and Kevin Grenier (and Forrest Hagar, although he was limited by a sore back).

Can't say he was unblockable, but Taylor was a beast until that ankle injury at the end of the year slowed him a little. Glad he's getting patched up now so he can wrack some offensive lines and quarterbacks again in the fall.

Fearless prediction: Taylor Thompson will be the best defensive lineman in Conference USA in 2011, and it won't be close.

Amazing discipline from TT. Having sat out a spring football session due to injury, I understand what he might be feeling. I wasn't as disciplined as TT. A whole lot of feeling sorry for myself and fear of losing ground to others hit me. He is watching his weight, working out and participating with his teammates. Now that takes one heck of a man!

I look forward to seeing what he does next year. I think he will have a great season.

Integral part of the defense this year, dedicated athlete that views his body as a Temple, doing all the right things that will take him to the next level.

Go get em' TT !

For me, I would like to see a bit more production out of Thompson. I know he has made some important plays like the sacking the QB to end the UTEP game in 2009, but he is a non factor in a lot of games. Granted the lines job in a 3-4 is to hold up the lineman so the LBs can make the plays. Just my opinion.
