Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starSome athletes are satisfied being just that — elite athletes. That certainly is an apt description for SMU linebacker Ja'Gared Davis, who has 141 tackles and 11 sacks in his first two seasons, and earned first-team all-conference and honorable mention All-America honors as a sophomore. Davis visited with PonyFans.com to discuss how he has changed since he arrived at SMU nearly two years ago, what his goals are and what he is doing to reach them.

Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starIn my opinion Davis was plenty mean looking last year from what I could see on TV. Hope he has a good season.

Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starI'm all for getting Blue Chip recruits out of High School here at SMU, but don't worry when the Coaches find a good unranked prospect who commits. Ja'Gared Davis was Rated a 2 Star LB by Rivals out of High School....You think Rivals missed on this young man a little bit ?

Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starGreat story, webguys.
Thanks for covering the Ponies like nobody else. I see a huge season for JG this year. If Victor Jones and the other OLBs on the opposite side can provide enough of a threat to keep offenses honest (and not load up on JG's side), he'll easily hit double digits in sacks this year.
Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starTwo years from now, we're talking about which NFL team will be the best fit for Davis.
Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starCowboys second round draft pick was 6'1" 242 and he was considered to be undersized. I would think JG needs to add another 15-20 pounds if he is going to be considered draftable. He has 2 more years so its definately doable. Also, his production on the field can't be overlooked. Playmaker.
Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starHe may be fast enough to be a strong safety...
Re: Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising star
A la darren woodson who was a lb in college
Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starI don't see him moving to safety in the pros. I think he'll get drafted as a 3-4 OLB like he is in our defense right now

Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starhe should have a 3 star-any LB who can qualify for the Texas 3A Track Meet in the Hurdles+ plus actually play excellent football definitely meets the inflated 3 star standards Rivals is putting out there these days. I agree they screwed up on Davis. LBs usually aren't state ranked sprint hurdlers. A few recruitniks were still pretty excited about Davis if you recall. They also missed on that ECU RB Chris Johnson who was one of the Top High School sprinters in the Country as a high school senior (although he missed his senior year with a broken leg).. Perhaps they should pay greater attention to the track season. I know I do. When you get right down to it-you are recruiting athletes who project to the next level. Davis fits that standard and he did in high school.

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starI've got a marketing idea... JG bobble head dolls that bobble their head like Davis after he sacks someone.

Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising star
Definitely. On my team in HS, we had a guy nationally ranked in both hurdles who went on to play WR at Rice, but none of our LB's would have been able to touch him on the track. Derail the Frogs!
Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising starour head coach was his at crocket and has always marveled at his attitude and potential
Re: Ja'GARED DAVIS: Rising star
low ranking probably due to his height (listed at 6'0" in high school). had late interest from A&M
