Are we interested in bringing in a one year QB?

Postby RE Tycoon » Thu May 05, 2011 11:30 am

I say bring him and make a run at something special. Sit Kyle for a year (redshirt) and let him mature and master the play book a little more. We go BCS bowling this year, then have Kyle as a RS Junior to pick up where we left off and have a nice three year run of awesomeness.

Sound like a plan?

One of the most talented quarterbacks in the country, Russell Wilson, is a free agent for his senior season. North Carolina State released him from his scholarship because he insisted on playing second base this spring for the Asheville Tourists, a Single-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

Wilson threw 28 touchdown passes last year and ran for nine more, leading the ACC in total offense (307.5 yards per game).

At least a dozen schools are chasing Wilson, who says he will play somewhere outside the ACC. Auburn and South Carolina are two SEC schools making hard pitches. Ole Miss is a possibility. Schools from the Big East, Conference USA and even the Big 12, reportedly, are inquiring

Who needs a QB? UTEP and Memphis come to mind.

I don't know how well he would fit in the run and shoot. I remember seeing him play last year and think he is a short athletic spread offense type - could be wrong.
But if he transfers, he is looking to start, and I don't know if he would want to compete against a two-year starter. Ole Miss, who seems to pull a transfer out of their a$$e$ every year, may be what he's looking for. Dunno. But I think it we might be an odd fit.

Kyle deserves to play. it's his position to lose. JJ doesn't seem to have a problem recruiting quarterbacks.

Even with a release doesn't he still have to sit a year if going D1? I am pretty sure that is the case.

This is an offense that you recruit and coach QBs into. You don't go out and get a one year wonder.

Great question. Is there a difference between a school releasing a player from their scholarship (kicking them out) and just a plain old transfer? It would seem that in this case the school made the decision and not the player. The stories I read all seemed to indicate he would come in right away and play.

I think my strategy from the first post would work with the right type of QB, but I was mentioning this guy in jest. I don't think he is right for our system.

Padron had a higher completion rate, more yards, fewer attempts and therefore more yards per attempt, more touchdowns and eight fewer sacks.

Based on quarterback rating, Padron was #43 in the nation and Wilson was #68.

Other than that -- and the fact that Wilson doesn't know our system -- I say we go for it.

The difference is he is graduating from NCSU, not transferring. If you graduate, have eligibility left and go to a school that has a graduate program not offered at your former school, you can petition to play immediately. That's what Masoli used last year in order to play at Mississippi.

I saw no mention of him graduating. If he did you are correct. As far as the school releasing him as their decision, if that let him transfer without sitting out you would see kids punching coaches or doing other such things to get kicked out if they wanted to transfer. Pretty sure, if he has not graduated, he would have to sit.

I understand UVA's coach London wants him, but Wilson doesn't want to play in the ACC.

And thus, you are correct sir. Now the interesting thing to see will be his selection of degree pursuit that is not offered at his former school.

Really don't think JJ would be interested. One (of probably many) of the reasons Willis was not the QB as a senior is it takes time to learn this offense.
