Met Ryan Mallett's agent (Not SMU)

Postby mrydel » Sat May 14, 2011 2:20 pm

Just making Saturday afternoon conversation.

I met Mallett's agent today when he came to me on unrelated business. He had some interesting stories to tell which, and I do apologize, I will not repeat ones about his personality on this forum. Not because they are anything bad but too often written interpretations are taken in the wrong context. I will say that apparently he is somewhat misunderstood and a very nice young man.

Some things he did talk about I can pass on. While at a try out camp in Dallas, some agents for receivers specifically said their clients would not catch Mallett's passes because of the velocity of his throws. Also, (and I did not catch when this was) there was a time when Mallett's school had to either switch or have special receiver gloves made because his passes were so hard that the ones they had, which were seamed up the middle, would split when the ball hit the hand. They had to get ones with seams on the side.

I will say that from what he had to say, Mallet is in a perfect spot for this time in his life and his career. The time behind Brady will allow him to progress at a pace that will suit him.

Being Tom Brady's caddy for a few years is perfect for that kid.

But he's going to have to learn to mix in a changeup every now and then while serving up 100-MPH fastballs. Word is Kyle Boller came into the NFL trying to show everyone that he had a bazooka hanging from his shoulder, throwing every pass as hard as he could. Since then, he has never been much more than a lifetime backup. Coincidence? Maybe ... maybe not.

Actually Mallett has a very good touch. He needs a lot of work on his footwork so he does not have to just rely on strength to get the ball where he wants.

I recall that John Elway had a problem with throwing too hard. I think in his case his coach told the receivers to adjust but either way it worked out for him.

Playing football in D-1A is hard. Gong to class is even harder.

That is the way he said they used to be made. Not having ever worn them I cannot speak to that.
