Marquee Win?

Postby PonyTime » Thu May 19, 2011 12:59 pm

Many on this site refer to TCU beating a down USC team in the Sun Bowl as the "turning the corner" win for the frogs.

Who is your "down" marquee team that you would love to see SMU beat in a Bowl game?

I nominate a Liberty Bowl matchup with Tennessee for that Marquee Bowl win...

Other thoughts?

Paul Hackett is a DB and USC was totally over-confident.

USC freshman quarterback Carson Palmer conceded the Trojans didn't think much of TCU before the game.

"We definitely took TCU for granted," Palmer said. "We thought we could do pretty much what we wanted, but they really shut us down. I was surprised when we couldn't run the football. I couldn't believe it when they scored their first touchdown. ... I was shocked when it was 21-0."

Even the losers get lucky some time!

TCU, 6-5 during the regular season and no better than a .500 team in the Mountain Division of the Western Athletic Conference, scored on its first three possessions.

A mediocre, uninspired USC who hates their coach, El Paso, and the Sun Bowl unsurprisingly losing to a dog is not my idea of a "turning the corner" win.

Liberty Bowl win over a SEC powerhouse that is having a bad year...Arkansas, alabama, or Auburn would be a signature win. Heck, even beating a good SC team would do the trick.

Not a bowl game, but beating A&M or TCU (both of whom will be ranked when we play them) would be a marquee win IMO- and would go farther in Texas recruiting than beating an SEC team that's having a down year

If we could beat both those teams in one year that would cause huge waves in Texas. SMU would be the hot name. Next year while TCU is a great team and will be loaded, they are replacing Dalton who was a very good QB for them. We catch them early. So, if we play well, cause a few TO's, and Padron has the game of his life, who knows. The Aggies hopefully will read their press clippings and come out flat. Otherwise, it could be a tough start for us.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I remember our own beloved Mustangs playing an "uninspired" Sun Bowl game against Bama and getting our arses handed to us.

How about a "signature" win to open the season at A&M? I think that would qualify

I'm with a big win over A&M. No question It would be big for Texas recruiting and the college football media would make a major event out of a SMU win

Beat an unmotivated, uninterested major conference opponent. Way to dream the impossible dream.

It will take more than one win in my opinion. From 94-98 we beat Arkansas three times. During that same span we tied A&M once and lost on the last play of the game on a pass that was clearly out of bounds. None of those efforts were enough for Rossley to keep his job.

Win eight games with one at TCU or A&M in the regular season, blow out teams we should, and thump a team from a BS conference in the bowl. Then I think we can say we turned the corner.

Had we done that with the current admission standards, we wouldn't be having these discussions...

Rossley put some halfway decent teams together but we have to admit Arkansas had some weak teams during that stretch
