That’s because this year’s 53rd annual game on Dec. 31 is going retro with today's announcement that it will be televised on ABC instead of ESPN.
There were also 16 Liberty Bowls televised by ABC, including 15 straight from 1966 through 1980

The AutoZone Liberty Bowl will be one of just five bowls out of the 35 postseason games not televised by ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU. The others are the Rose and the Outback (both on ABC), Sun (CBS) and the Cotton (Fox).
“It’s nice our bowl has had a past history with ABC,†Ehrhart said. “Some of those Liberty Bowls were on Monday nights, like it was part of the Monday Night Football package. Playing this year’s game on ABC on Saturday is like getting back to our bowl’s roots. It reconnects us with our history.â€
