DER'RIKK THOMPSON: Ready to take off

Postby PonyPride » Wed Jun 29, 2011 12:49 am

When Aldrick Robinson got drafted in April by the Washington Redskins, the SMU offense lost not only its top big-play threat but also a wideout so fast that opposing defenses had to honor his game-breaking speed. Filling that role in 2011 could be freshman Der'Rikk Thompson, who visited with PonyFans.com to discuss his evolution as a receiver, what he learned from Robinson and the transition he faced going from a 2A high school to a Div. I college offense.

Enjoy!

Fantastic story, and Thompson sounds like a great kid. I had read comments about how fast he was, but for Al Robinson to suggest Thompson is even faster than he is? Wow (thanks for the flashback on some of the other fast guys ... Wilson ... Freeman ... Berry, etc.) He sounds humble, but he sounds like he has a lot of promise.

The season can't get here fast enough. Go Mustangs!

Isn't this the guy who's related to Keylon Kincade?

Any more family members headed to SMU in the future?

If his talent and technique can measure up to his speed, he could develop into a hell of a player. Let's hope.

Yes we know he can run, but has anything been said about his hands or catching ability?

AR's hands greatly improved over the course of his career at SMU. Yes he had a case of the drops/fumbles his junior year, but that seemed to disappear last year.

Der'rick won the Heisman as SMU's leading receiver in NCAA Football 2010 for PS3 for me last summer.

Sure did, to the extent that he got drafted. When you think about how much he improved from his freshman year to his senior year ... here's hoping Thompson makes similar strides.
