DALLAS (SMU) - For the third straight year, SMU Athletics has set a fundraising record. For fiscal year 2011, which ended May 31, SMU Athletics added $6.6 million in annual gifts, breaking the $6 million mark for the first time. It was only a year ago that Athletics surpassed the $5 million mark for the first time. Including capital and other gifts, over $10.5 million was given to SMU Athletics in 2011. Since Steve Orsini's arrival as Director of Athletics in 2006, SMU Athletics has seen an astonishing 82% spike in annual giving despite a challenging economic environment.

"We are so thankful for the support of our generous fans," said Orsini. "Our alumni have continued to support our talented student-athletes throughout these tough economic times and we can't thank them enough. I also want to thank and congratulate and our Mustang Club volunteers as well as our development staff, led by (Sr. Assoc. A.D.) Tim Leonard. This achievement is a testament to the loyalty Mustang fans have shown for SMU and for our athletics programs."

This year's success in annual operating support exceeded the previous record year, 2010, when the Mustangs added over $5.4 million to the coffers in annual support. Prior to that, a record $4.6 million was received in 2009.

Hopefully as the "big time" athletic teams continue to improve and gain exposure (through nationally televised games), the dough will start to fly in.

Does 6 million raised sound paltry to anyone else? For a school with a reputation of having some big-time money six million seems like junior college-type money.Seems like it should be more in the 25-50 million range with the occasional uptick since it is private. Anyone know what the figures are for the revenue generated each year and expenditures? UT was like 143000000 and 130000000.

This statistic is money exclusively for athletics and if I am not mistaken only includes money devoted to operational expenditures, not infrastructure.
