I remember going to some Colt games-pretty much died out after freshman eligibility in about 1970

In a way it is a shame there isn't some Freshman or JV system to give younger players some competition experience.

That one was just a little before my time, but yes I did start at LB against the Owlets. They beat the crap out of us. 30-0. We had 7 starters in street clothes after half time due to injury. 3 DBs were injured on the last play of the first half on a hail Mary pass into the end zone that was caught for a Rice td. I was helped off the field 3 times due to injury, but did finish the game. And on defense for Rice, Rodrigo Barnes was a man amongst children. I really thought Rice would win the SWC with that group, but I guess many must have flunked out.

And for what it is worth, that same year we beat the shorthorns including the great Jim Bertlesen.

As a kid in Texarkana, I remember going to the Colts-Razorbacks (or whatever they were called) at Grim stadium in Texarkana. It was played there for quite a few years annually. What fun!!!

was 1970 the last year of FR football? If so, I remember that bunch because that was my FR year. Who can forget that Joe Namath wannabe, Casey Ortiz who went on to spend some time with Vanna White before he passed? I'm really getting old

ask mrydel-he's a LOT older than me. I just remember Wayne Morris playing on Varsity in the first year that freshman could. After mrydel got hurt they probably realized they couldn't jeopardize the careers of their studs in a Frosh game. Mrydel killed the Colts!!!

You know I honestly do not remember but I think my year was the last year of freshman football (68) because I recall us knowing that we ended the UT series with a win that they could never overcome. Some memories are very clear and others are faded. You guys will all understand someday. I do remember Casey Ortiz but do not think they had freshman ball then.

We did have freshman football in fall semester '70. Bum Phillips was one of the coaches. Casey O., So. Cal's. high school offensive player of the year 1970, was God's gift to women, in his mind, as he chained his Harley to the light poll outside of Cockrell- McIntosh Hall, while knocking over everyone else's bicycles. Wonder how sand ever ended up in gas tank. Anyway, when you Freshman lettered you got a red cardigan with a blue M and your name embroidered in the button seam. Still have mine in a box somewhere. Casey transferred to Hawaii where he became the star, and another quarterback his same age had to ride the pine. Casey turned the rainbows around, got into a pi..ing contest with the coaching staff, and tried to lead the team in a walk-off protest. Didn't work and he quit. The other QB I believe transferred to Portland St. Colt games were held at Ownby at the time, while The Cotton Bowl was considered home stadium.

I do not remember Bum Phillips as a coach at SMU in 1970. I was on the team and I think I would remember him, although once again old age is attacking me.

Wow. That surprises me. That is when I was hurt and I was coaching the redshirts under the leadership of Dave Smith. I did not have any dealings with the freshman but am surprised that a personality like Bum would not have stood out. But then again, at least when I was a freshman they kept us pretty far from the varsity unless they wanted to build some confidence by letting them beat on us for a while.

Mrydel, when did Dave Smith go to Okie State as head coach. I remember when Hayden was replaced by him in fall '72.

Should have been 1972. That is when I graduated. Then one year later Hayden was fired and Dave came back. I understand, although I was living out of state and there was no internet to keep up with things, that the final choice for head coach was Dave or Bum. As much as I loved Dave, I think Bum may have worked out better.

I think Hayden was fired in '73.

Yah, I loved it. Hayden goes 7-4 in' 71-'72 season and they bring back D.S. And, that rocket scientist we hired to replace Willis Tate, who blows the whistle on SMU to the Southwest Conference and the NCAA for $5 fumble recoveries and $10 interceptions (Dave wanted to take the boosters out of the equation and control the team himself, so he could wean the team off of illegal influences, or so he said). End result, we go on probation, Dave gets fired after '74-'75 season, and the school's Board of Governor's fire the president for whistle blowing.
