Oregon Maybe Going Down Hard

I seriously can't imagine the NCAA failing to find that Will Lyles is a "representative of Oregon" if these allegations are true. Pretty seedy stuff in here-I hope SMU knows what it is doing by associating with NCAA Most Wanted Street Agent No. 2 by having this 7 on 7 Tournament this week because I think the NCAA is zeroing in on this stuff. Traditionally, cheating in the recruitment phase, as opposed to "extra benefits", is treated much harsher by the NCAA. I expect a serious probation for Oregon. Chip Kelley may not survive this story-its bad.

Didn't see your post before I put it on the Recruiting page. But here is an athlete that fears passing the TAKS test, so moves to Arkansas for a semester to avoid it, the Oregon coaches were well aware of this ploy and congradulated the agent, then two years latter he makes Pac 10 All-Academic team! Must be academic fraud inside and outside the program. Plus attempting to cover up the NCAA inquiry after the fact (lying to the NCAA) and of course paying a recruiting agent.

Ha! I almost posted the exact same thing but decided not to because I guess every kid deserves a chance to improve and I have no idea if he worked hard academically at Oregon. But it raises eyebrows DON'T IT.

No makes me wonder if a typical East Texas High School is academically more difficult than the University of Oregon?

I will say one thing for Lyles-he came clean about his dealings with Oregon. He's basically put a nail in that school's coffin. Oregon is gonna have to distance itself from Kelley. How many hours, days or months does Kelley have left. The NCAA will likely directly penalize Kelley in this case-it has that power now. This is a pretty clean take down with very few loose ends at least with regard to Lache Seastruck

I wonder if Will Lyles will be as forthcoming on the Claim by former A&M/now Tulsa assistant Van Malone that Lyles shopped Patrick Peterson around to A&M for $80,000 before he eventually signed with LSU. Let's take down the Tigers at the same time.

Absolutely right, Stallion. I bet that happens the next time they revisit those rules.

No way anything of any significance happens to Oregon, though. The school is owned ... er, "funded" ... by Nike, which pours way too much money into the university and into college athletics on just about every level.

My guess is that Oregon gets far less of a hit than Ohio State or USC ... and maybe not even close.

Just read those stories. Maybe I was a little premature in my guess that nothing of significance happens to Oregon. Now I think Kelly will be fired, and he'll be identified as the chief culprit. Oregon's penalty still will be far less than it should be, but Kelly and one or two assistants will get most of the heat.

"Lyles said he spoke with NCAA enforcement staffers for six hours in early May as part of their ongoing investigation. He said he didn’t reveal the stories concerning Kelly, James and Seastrunk to investigators because the specific topics never came up in questioning."

Before we say that Oregon is "Toast", the NCAA might be managing the investigation so they get the results they want. This whole investigation came up because of the Seastrunk rumors, but they didn't ask about Seastrunk or his recruitment.

If the story is true, and Lyles has not proven at all consistent in his stories, it seems to me he would not be considered simply a booster, but a paid agent of the university. They paid him for something-certainly not a recruiting report that was quickly put together to protect the head coach's story to the NCAA. As an agent, it would be like having an extra assistant coach, which would be over the limit, and all his contacts during blackout periods, phone calls, texting, arranging the scheme to avoid the TAKs test, buying lunches, picking him up from practice, taking to the airport for recruiting trips would all be major recruiting violations--even if the recruit or family recieved no money. Or am I wrong?
