Tuesday (7/5/11) voluntary workout notes

Didn't make it to the seven-on-seven drills, but arrived in time to see part of the conditioning running (so yes, this report is short). Nearly 60 players on the 2011 roster took part (plus a couple of alums). Several of the incoming freshmen were there; again, I don't yet know them all by face (sorry, guys), but those who I did see included CB Rodney Hubert, LB Jonathan Yenga, NT Rishaad Wimbley, RB Jared Williams, DE Cameron Smith, DE/LB Jarrett Spencer, WR Bobby Waid, WR Caldwell Flores, WR Nyle Johnson, CB Daren Kitchen, CB J.R. Richardson, LB Stephon Sanders, DB Michael Sparling, WR Arrius Holleman, WR Darius Joseph, OT Kris Weeks and NT Darrian Wright.

Two of the incoming freshmen sat out:

• DE Zach Wood, who said he reported at 250 pounds, watched from the sideline because of a back strain. Wood said he suffered the injury while "overworking" his back during a workout last week at Rowlett High School.

Sitting out Tuesday, he said, was merely a precaution. "I ran some sprints the other day, and felt fine," he said, adding that he might rest it another few days, just to make sure his recovery is complete.

• OL Dontae Levingston was out on the field Tuesday ... with a walking boot on his right foot.

Levingston injured the foot last week while running from Manhattan Beach to Hermosa Beach and back (round trip: six miles). He said he didn't feel anything immediately, but said the foot was sore when he woke up the next day.

"I was hoping to be out of the boot by today," Levingston said, "but now they're saying I can't get rid of it until I get a special sole insert for the shoe." Like Wood, Levingston said he expects to be working out with his teammates in "a few days."

Was there some academic issue with Levingston, was that someone else, or has that been resolved?
:?:

Levingston has had no known academic problems that any one has reported, maybe you are thinking of Moreland?

I am new to the football process at SMU, but looking forward to tracking the Mustangs this year. Can someone tell me what days the voluntary 7-on-7 drills typically take place? Thanks.

Why is an O-line guy running six miles? I get burning some kCals but that seems like a recipe for an injury. But I can appreciate needing to check on the scenery between Hermosa and Manhattan.
