Postby Water Pony » Wed Jul 13, 2011 3:39 pm

WACO (SMU/TSHOF) - Football standout Louie Kelcher and swim coach legend Richard Quick represent SMU on the 2011 Texas Sports Hall of FamebBallot, the TSHOF Selection Committee has announced.

Kelcher, an All-America nose guard for the Mustangs and Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1974, went on to play in the NFL, earning three Pro Bowl invites and a Super Bowl ring with the San Francisco 49ers in 1984.

Richard Quick

Quick, who passed away in June 2009, was a six-time United States Olympic coach who directed 13 teams to NCAA titles, the most ever by a swimming coach. He grew up in Dallas, received both his bachelor's and master's degrees at SMU and began his coaching career on the Hilltop. He also played a huge role in starting the women's program at SMU.

Large Louie was one of the all-time great lineman at SMU. He was also a great character. Claimed he played football barefoot in High School because they didnt have any shoes big enough for him. I remember going to an SMU/A&M basketball game at Moody when I was a little kid. A huge bench clearing fight broke out, and Louie, who I think was a senior, came out of the stands to single handedly take control of the situation. The Aggies were frozen with fear and that was the end of the trouble. He is still beloved in San Diego where he was one of their all-time greats as well.

Swam with Richard, when he was a senior and Team Captain and I was freshman. Class act and highly successful as a college swim coach as well as the US Olympic Swim Team. He was acknowledged as an SMU Distinguished Alumni a couple of years ago.

From Wikipedia:

Richard Walter Quick (January 31, 1943, Akron, Ohio – June 10, 2009, Austin, Texas) was the head coach of the women's swim team at Stanford University, California, U.S. from 1988 through 2005. He has been a coach for the US Olympic team for six Olympics - 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004. Following the 2007 season, he returned to Auburn University as head coach of the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving team.

At the Sydney Olympics he led the women's team to sixteen medals. At Stanford he won seven NCAA titles and developed 35 NCAA Champions, winning five NCAA Coach of the Year honors and three Pac-10 Coach of the Year awards. His most successful swimmer is Jenny Thompson who has won eight Olympic Golds. Other notable Olympians coached by Quick include Ambrose "Rowdy" Gaines, Steve Lundquist, Summer Sanders, Dara Torres and Misty Hyman. He previously was head women's swimming coach at the University of Texas, where his teams won five consecutive NCAA titles (1984-88).

On March 8, 2007 Auburn University announced that Quick would return to the Tigers to take over as Head Coach for the Swimming and Diving teams after David Marsh left. Quick was Marsh's coach when he was a backstroker for Auburn. In March 2007 Marsh won his 12th NCAA National title, tying his former coach and mentor for the most titles won by an NCAA Coach. He broke the tie the following year, winning a 13th title.

Quick was a top swimmer himself at Highland Park High School (University Park, Texas) and Southern Methodist University where he made All-Southwest Conference. He is a member of SMU's Distinguished Alumni.

In December of 2008 Quick was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. He died on June 10, 2009.[1] His 2008-2009 Auburn team won the National title.
