From the Longview (Texas) News-Journal:
SMU head coach June Jones said he is looking for a good season from Tatum native Larry Centers Jr., a redshirt freshman receiver, despite a setback in spring football.
Centers was unable to participate in the spring because of a thumb injury. Jones said Centers has evolved in several areas as a receiver. Centers is a son of Larry Centers, a 14-year fullback in the NFL who excelled in catching passes out of the backfield.
“He’s fast and he runs good routes,†said Jones, who coached in the NFL from 1987 to 1998. “The way he catches passes reminds me of his father.â€
Jones said he realizes that Centers Jr. may have been overshadowed at Tatum by other standouts such as running back B.J. Allen but added Centers’ running back background has helped him at the collegiate level.
“A lot of successful receivers have been ex-running backs,†Jones said. “Larry is just right for us.â€
SMU was 7-7 in 2010, 6-2 in Conference USA.
