Nov. 13, 1982: Undefeated SMU, led by running back Eric Dickerson, entered the game ranked No. 2 in the nation. Underdog Texas Tech kicked a game-tying field goal with 17 seconds left and looked as if it was headed for an impressive tie. The ensuing kickoff bounced to the Mustangs and was muffed, but with the Red Raiders kickoff team bearing down, Blaine Smith threw a bouncing lateral to the sidelines and Bobby Leach caught it, returning it 91 yards for the touchdown and a shocking 34-27 win.
or if you want to skip to the Punt return go to 2:14 in the video here:
By the way-half century Texas Tech announcer Jack Dale died this week. That's a great call he made on the Leach return. He counted off the yards-his specialty- then cries "He Could go all the way". It was a different time as a kid. The Humble Network carried every game in every town in Texas. And guys like Jack Dale, Frank Fallon, Connie Alexander, Stan McKenzie and Kern Tipps who I mostly remember from the Humble Exhibit at the State Fair who produced the much anticipated SWC Highlites Show. did a great job in those days that current announcers can't touch. Every school had their legendary announcer. Yes even Dave South at A&M. I still remember driving home from the Cotton Bowl and listening to Frank Fallon calling the 4th Quarter of the Miracle on the Brazos-it was a Masterpiece. Most SWC fans listened to every game for every team and every fan knew exactly what radio dial to hear every team. You gave a [deleted] about every game because you knew as much about your opponent as you did about your own team. You followed the SWC-not 121 games across the Country on 15 Networks. Luckily I was in the stands that day for the Miracle on 7th Street and never heard the Jack Dale call until later but I'm sure it must have been one of the truly great moments in SMU History even if you were listening on the Humble Network. Those were great times in Texas Football History that will never be duplicated I fear.

Ah, the old days. I use my iPhone app that picks up SMU games, plug it into my retro appearing radio, and listen to the games when not attending and not on TV. Use to park a vehicle out in an open lot and listen over AM to the games when I lived a bit closer to Dallas. And mrydel and I have both been in mourning as the Miss State announcer retired. He entertained us when we were driving home after a SMU game.

He entertained us so much we had to keep slapping each other awake.
