OT: How arrogant is ESPN?

Postby Casey » Mon Aug 08, 2011 11:55 pm

They made up a stat (the so-called Total Quarterback Rating), which is designed to rank quarterbacks based on "everything from completions and interceptions to sacks taken, fumbles, rushing plays and more."

I guess this fits here, because it's safe to assume ESPN will force-feed the stat to us all season long.

True, the previous quarterback rating is a little odd (the maximum ranking is something random like 158.3 or so), but the NFL and NCAA get to make up stats ... not a damn network.

Saw that. I hope they keep it only to the NFL. I don't want to have to pay attention to a stupid stat that makes ESPN feel even more important.

OT: How arrogant is ESPN?

There are all sorts of stats in baseball, football and basketball that were "made up" by people besides the leagues.

This page for sabermetrics has a long list for baseball.

I am not saying that espn is not arrogant, I am just saying they are far from being the first people outside of a league to start tracking a stat and I do not think it is even close to being a sign of arrogance.

ESPN is arrogant but there's no harm in sabermetrics

I wish there was a stat for "doing everything in your power to help your team win".

I believe it was Billy Zane in the movie Zoolander who coined the phrase "Walk Off"

The QB rating is the most ridiculous stat ever. Some mysterious stat not tied to a base ten scale is virtually meaningless. If a stat is something the average joe can't compute or understand while the game is going on, then it is worthless as a stat, IMO.
