DeLoss Dodds: UT-ND To Create Conference

This was reported by Chip Brown that Dodds was quoted at a luncheon today when asked about the possible fallout should A&M leave the Bevo 10. Said Texas and Notre Dame could align and create their own conference.
My question is who joins this conference? How would this work with ND's deal with NBC and Texas' deal with ESPN?

Why would ND do this? Notre Dame already has their own deal with the BCS. They have fans from Coast to Coast. UT doesn't have the same following. They have a large following, but not like ND. ND has their own deal with the BCS. Depending on how many cable networks carry the LHN there is no reason for UT to get the same deal. What I am getting at: How would this benefit ND?
Unless UT wants to part with a great deal of their new found ESPN money there is no benefit to ND.

From last round....
Post: #1Chip Brown comments on Texas/ND/expansion
Q: “Was Texas ever a strong possibility to join the Big Ten or was that just wishful thinking?â€
A: “Texas did not want to be the southern boundary of the Big Ten. They were concerned about excess travel and wanted to preserve their natural rivalries. The Big Ten wanted Texas alone. They didn’t want to bring everybody else.â€
Q: “Will Notre Dame ever join the Big Ten or will they stick to being an independent in college football?â€
A: “I’d argue that if Notre Dame ever does join a conference, they’d look at the Big 12 before the Big Ten. With that, they could still maintain their own TV contract (with NBC). In fact, Texas and Notre Dame had some conversations about just that, but nothing developed.â€
(My comment: I had read that the Texas and ND athletic directors met several times during this past expansion process and were in regular communication, but this is the first I heard of discussions about Texas and ND in the same conference not named the Big Ten).

This was my thinking as well. What incentive does ND have to do this? Also, what other teams could they bring in realistically?

Hey! This just might be BYU's lucky day

probably would be more of an alliance than a conference. ND needs protection long term because they haven't been getting it done on the field and there is only so long the Big 10 and SEC go along with their special bcs deal. The jig may be up for ND in 2014 renewal.

The fact that ND has been playing poorly should make the Big Ten and SEC really happy. Their special deal is never put into play. ND's real issue isn't with the BCS or what the other conferences think of their special deal, the real issue is going to be with NBC. If ND's poor play forces NBC pulls the plug on the TV deal or lessens it to the point that joining a conference becomes a good idea then ND becomes a full member of the Big East. Good for the BE, but financially devastating to ND.

I don't think NBC will pull the plug on ND.

maybe, but there are different levels of access. ND might keep its access to the BCS but it may be diminished severely with hurdles and qualifications. Just wait until ND goes undefeated one time playing Army, Navy, Purdue and Northwestern and a probation decimated USC. The SEC can see it coming and they won't wait for it to happen.

Conferences are counterproductive if you got a National TV Contract. Why share. I would see schools like Texas, ND and BYU create a loose confederation and then play whoever they want. Oklahoma would probably be involved. More money from ESPN which could then show every Texas game

exactly, scheduling alliances and the buddy system to counteract the SEC and Big 10 influence on the BCS. No conference necessary.

What about USC? If not for the probation-there's bound to be a Network that would love to have their games in such a huge market. They already play ND-Texas was willing to play on the West Coast and the school at least has an academic reputation. I've always thought the PAC12 had too many weak sisters and would eventually split somehow. Playing on the West Coast would be easier if it only involved USC or a few schools. I know long time PAC observers disagree that PAC could ever break up though

Sure, NBC is going to team up with ESPN...no one wants to partner with Texas, no one. They are simply not to be trusted: SWC; Big 12; Pac 16; Big 12, minus 2; Big 12, minus 3; they keep sticking it to their partners, ask Nebraska, A&M, OU, Baylor, Tech, Kansas, K State, OSU, Iowa St., Mo., and the rest of the former members of the SWC! They are simply to big to partner with anyone--just ask any Longhorn!

I think USC is going to go with the Pac 12 Network, for a while at least. From what I have read, the Network already has cable networks all over the west coast and mountains lined up to broadcast the station. We'll have to wait and see how this increases revenues for member teams to see where USC Falls.
I think the worst thing to happen to that conference in the last 15 years is that USC became so dominant. It became a one horse race. Now that Oregon is good, Stanford is tough, I have hopes for UW, and Utah will come up with at least one win a year it shouldn't the conference is more compelling.

And they'll be splitting it 12 ways according to PAC Bylaws while Texas will keep it all. In the long range perspective-why would they want to do that.
