I'm not too sure all the NCAA iinvestigations which bring SMU/DP back up is a bad thing for us.

We were wrong, but compared to how everyone else is being treated....maybe it's time to correct a mistake?

He also called Shapiro a "jock-sniffer wannabe.

Johnson said Shapiro seemed to be embellishing parts of the story; "He talked about entertaining kids on his yacht. A million dollars, that's not a yacht, that's a boat.

About the possibility of the NCAA handing down the 'death penalty,' which would eliminate the sport of football for a full year, Johnson said, "Let's clear up this death penalty thing. I think it's absolutely ridiculous. I think even the NCAA, after they did that to SMU, really decided that was the wrong move to make. And, really, I don't think anybody will ever receive that again."

The emergence of so many top notch programs with violations makes me wonder if the NCAA needs to rethink this theory of never handing down the DP again. It isn't that cheating has gotten any worse than its always been, it is just so much of it is no longer under the radar. The public is hearing more and more about various programs under investigation.

The NCAA may have to do something very drastic to convince the public that college athletics is not an out of control anything goes unfair competition situation. There may come a point where the NCAA realizes that it either destroys a few programs and perhaps conferences or it allows itself to be destroyed. It is hard to imagine college presidents allowing the athletic departments to destroy their control mechanism.

I think the whole thing is cyclical, Cheating is always pretty rampent (by that I eman there are always some big schools up to no good) but enforcement/punishment only occurs when enough happens in close succession to create the image of a problem so the NCAA over reacts and tries to slap a program as an example to quite things down. USC was their attempt to do this but the NCAA got unlucky that UNC, OSU, AUburn, and MIAMI all had issues come to light after. They swept UNC Auburn and OSU under the rug/ didn't punish at all and people are questioning there ability/integraty to do anthing about it. Add in the ties between the Miami program and the NCAA enforcement apparatus and I'd expect a very sever sanction coming onto miami (not the death penalty but something mroe severe than USC). It also helps that Miami has been down recently, plays in a less maquee conference and has laways been see as some what "dirty".

Every university in the country with a football program does a simple Risk/Reward analysis. As the NCAA shows that it has no teeth, the risks are no where near the rewards. Assuming that Auburn cheated with Cam Newton, if you look at the unadited financials for Auburn's main campus their "gifts" received doubled from FY '09 to FY '10. (I couldn't quickly find the Athletic Department separated figures). Now, I am not naive enough to think that this is 100% connected to the BCS Title, but a portion of it is. What has the result been of the NCAA paper tiger's investigation? Nothing. Auburn boosters made the right decision to pay off Rev Newton based on the risk/reward.

Somehow, slick Jimmie just doesn't qualify as the standard bearer of college foortball ethics. Jimmy's teams were an embarassment to the university--"Thug U".

I think Jimmy is right about the DP never being used again. Right or wrong, I think the NCAA looks back on our DP as the beginning of the end of the SWC. Think they will pull the plug on the ACC? Miami DP would leave the ACC with 11 participating members. Do they make an exception to allow a championship game?

One of the talking heads on ESPN just pegged it. He said that no BCS school will get the death penalty. Too disruptive to the networks and the bowls.
