I was there too. Great game. I got to sit with the SMU players' families. We were out numbered in the stands but were making all the noise at the end! You could have heard a pin drop from the Aggie faithful. Will never forget one of the classless Aggie female coeds actually spitting on us as we walked through the riverwalk with our SMU gear on.
Let's do more than tie them this year!
Go Ponies!
Beat tamu!!!

I remember listening to those games as well. Everybody got up to play aTm back then. It was a matter of pride, and it still is. The Aggies may be coming in with all the hype, but we took them to the limit back in the day with a whole lot less talent but no less intensity than we will this year. I still think we go down there and shock them. Anybody writing off the Mustangs is in for a rude awakening this year.

or, they could focus on game film from last year that might be relevant to this game. i get the motivation factor, but if it takes a tie game from when these kids were still in diapers to get them motivated, we've got problems.

agreed, i'm just saying that given the limited time that the team is allowed to meet/practice/etc, using 3 hours of it to watch a 17 year old game is probably not the best use. print the article and hand it out at a team meeting. or maybe have someone from that team show up for a pregame speech.

I was there, and that was as close as I have ever come to actually getting in a fight AT an athletic event.
The Aggies were so frustrated, they could not see straight.
About as happy as I have ever been following a tie.

I had graduated the year before this game, but flew in from law school to San Antonio to go to the game. I remember the momentary deflation when we missed that field goal, followed immediately by the realization that we'd just tied A&M. Memories are foggy, for obvious reasons, of the Riverwalk that night, although I do remember a rousing rendition of the alternate lyrics to the War Hymn -- we were young and drunk so no censorship -- by about 15 Mustang bandsmen at dinner, surrounded by stunned but cowed A&M supporters. I have no idea how we didn't get our butts kicked.
Unfortunately, in my excitement, I left my camera in my seat at the Alamodome, never to be seen again. So if anyone happened to pick up a camera and develop the photos, I'd sure love copies.
I still have the year end issue of Sports Illustrated where they picked our tie as the biggest upset of the year.
If we win this year -- and I'm not getting my hopes up, preferring instead to have realistic expectations -- I'll be the first to lead in chants of "S-E-C!" , assuming that my pregnant self has not succumbed to heat exhaustion by the end of the game. But if it happens, my family might need a place to stay, since our hosts are both Aggies.
