WSJ: "Does Miami Need Football?"

Their article explores this question. Football makes millions for the school, but also brings high costs; little impact on Academics? SMU experience is referenced, including our academic and endowment fund raising:

My understanding is that Miami-the University made incredible academic strides that coincide with the emergence of the Football program. It really has a pretty darn good academic reputation now. SMU suddenly stopped releasing detailed academic performance information in the exact year we got the DP. I know because I researched it at the time. The academic profile dropped precipitously-(which is probably how some of you got in)
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

In my case, SMU had one building, Dallas Hall, when I attended. The horse drawn carriage ride from the Dallas Train Station took two hours on unpaved roads. Upon arrival Robert Hyer, President, greeted me with a "are you a Yankee?" I said no, a swimmer. He pointed to the Trinity River and said good luck.
