Copy UTSA's Marketing Plan

Postby Pony in SA » Thu Aug 25, 2011 10:43 am

UTSA has done wonderful job down here of selling their new team as the "home town team." Radio, TV, billboard spots stating "Come support your home town team." They have been very successful with now over 12,000 season tickets sold.

I know difficult to compare to schools, but if we are not going to have marketing dept. why not at least copy one that has worked somewhere else ? At least make the effort to make SMU Dallas' home town team. It seems from reading the board there is no plan or effort at all, hard to sell a product if no effort made.

Also, at Alamo Bowl kickoff luncheon yesterday learned UTSA's indoor practice facility construction will start soon and is projected to come in under $7 million. I have posted about their meetings and progress on their IPF before. Can't believe they will get one before we will. This should be priority for the powers to be.

I think he might be saying that it just looks bad for them to have one built before we do. But their marketing plan seems to be somewhat effective if they have already sold 12,000 season tickets without playing a game.

Bush Library is being paid for by GOP donations, right? Regardless of personal political leanings, scratch that from priority list.

Dorms are big priority. Fair enough.

Money already is in place for Moody facelift, right? Scratch that from list.

Tennis center is moved because of Moody/Bush projects, but I heard the new tennis facility is not being paid for by athletic department, that the university is coming up with the cash decision to move tennis facility was made by university administration, not athletics.

I think the bigger hangup on IPF is where to put soccer facility, and just as important, how to pay for it. Once that is solved, shovels can hit the ground on the IPF.

That and how much construction can you have going on at the same time on the campus? We are not some sprawled out state school with tons of room. My guess is, if the money is in place that's the issue.

Someone stated that Moody has been fully funded. I didn't think that was yet the case.

Moody will have to be done before library, that's where some of the big events for the opening are going to be held....

Just wanted to second the notion that UTSA is the only game in town in San Antonio. They've got the Spurs and nothing else. They're desperate for any kind of football above the high school level.

They also don't have to fight the snob factor that weighs down SMU, or the 20-plus years of losing. There's nothing negative associated with UTSA football - they haven't even lost a game.

They may have 12,000 season ticket holders now, but check back in a few years after the newness has worn off and people are tired of watching no-name opponents in a small-time conference. They're selling a vision of big-time football right now, but they won't be playing big-time football for a loooong time.

While we're at it, let's copy UTSA's marketing budget, too.

Oh ... wait ...

If the money is there, let's go in this order:

IPF
Soccer-specific facility
Moody facelift
Natatorium
Track
Relocated tennis
Treehouses for each student
Dubbya library
