You guys!

I get that you harbor some resentment towards our ascendency as an institution. After all, we just added the region's sole pharmacy program last week. Great things have been happening in Denton for the past few years and it is only understandable that the established universities would feel a little threatened by a burgeoning state supported juggernaut just 30 miles to the north. I get that.

However, SMU is a great, unique institution who has permanently carved out its place in the world and its mark on Dallas. You represent the establishment class - we are the up and coming bourgeois. You will always be what you are (a great liberal arts/business school). We have become something we were not (a first rate research university). We need both in the area. It is time that we had a legitimate competitor to UT and A&M right here in North Texas for state research universities.

It is only fitting that as the institutional dynamics change between NT and the other schools in the region that the athletic component would be in flux as well. We have made a committment to a first class athletic department and football is center stage with lavish facilities and a proven winning coach. This is simply the formula that you followed to success. Of course some of your fanbase will be opposed to parity between our schools out of jingoistic fears that we will erode your recruiting base, etc. However, this is the most fertile recruiting ground in the country. There is plenty of talent to go around.

The benefits of a true rivalry, especially a conference rivalry, far outweigh any detriments to you.

man, glad yall can now compete with SW Okla State & A&M Kingsville for pharm students.

and regarding the comment " Great things have been happening in Denton for the past few years "...um, but what if no one noticed?

I was driving to Austin a couple of weeks ago and had wondered where the 'UNT-Dallas' campus was. Seems like it's, what, halfway between Hillsboro and Waxahachie?
