http://www.minerrush.com/2011/9/1/23974 ... g-campaign...us here in the C-USA are now forced to take a look at the state of the C-USA, once again, and figure out if any new potential conference realignment insanity will cause a stir here at home.
We have all heard about the SMU Mustangs and their newly public campaign for inclusion in the Big 12. By the way, where the heck is Britton Banowsky when SMU President R. Gerald Turner makes comments like this?
"We are pushing for it," SMU president R. Gerald Turner said. "We want the city to know we’re pushing for it. We need as much help as possible, even from non-SMU alums. We believe it’s good for Dallas."
Yes, SMU is a fine academic institution. Yes, SMU was once a football powerhouse (even though they bent the rules for that success). While there is no denying that the Big 12 is a step or three up from the C-USA, I still wish SMU would go about this campaign a bit differently. I understand that realignment is all about doing what's best for yourself. But do you have to be so public with your aspirations? Can't you at least pretend to be happy with a league that has stood by you while your program recovered from the Death Penalty?
SMU is proving that the only thing that matters right now is getting what's best for yourself. It's for that reason that I think we will all enjoy watching the Big 12 breeze past Dallas for Provo, Pittsburgh, or Lousville, should they decide to replace the Aggies.

As TCU left the WAC and then CUSA to improve, it left a bitter taste for others that were their conference mates. I can understand UTEP's hurt feelings.
Perhaps there is a better way. I fear even if we get into the Big XII-II-I that it will implode in a year or two. Then we are left once again hoping to get a decent conference relationship. The best thing we can do is win and fill Ford.
I think filling Ford will do more to help us in the long run than a PR campaign.

UTEP upset that we aren't pretending to be happy as a boot-licker (non-AQ conference member)? Good. F-'em.

The old saying we must all hang together...or we will all hang separately...certainly doesn't apply here. Besides, I'd bet everything I own that RGT and or SO gave Bannowski a courtesy call before hand to let him know what we were planning on doing.
Let's get what's ours.

And while we're at it, F Tulane and Rice too. I'd love to see then do well but they aren't really trying right now, so they can rot in CUSA.

Cut the dead weight and move up. When our future is secure...whenever that may be...then you can turn to helping others.

As someone who was raised in El Paso all I can say to UTEP is oh well. College football is a dog eat dog world. If you end up being part of the have nots (this could still be us) you have only yourself to blame. There truly is no room for solidarity right now.

It's kinda like my wife telling me she would rather be married to George Clooney. Of course if she announced in the press I might object.

So glad that those who make decisions have gone from public statements of wanting to stick with Rice and Tulane to shamelessly hiking up SMU's skirt and flirting with AQ conferences.

Don't mind sticking around with UTEP if it means we can punt Rice.
