Oklahoma was considered a linchpin in holding the Big 12 together a year ago after Nebraska and Colorado defected to the Big Ten and Pac-10, respectively. OU was reportedly coveted by the Southeastern Conference and Pac-10 but decided to make a go of it in a 10-team Big 12. But with the announcement this week that Texas A&M is leaving the conference, Boren sounded dubious that the Big 12 could stay together.
“I don't think OU is going to be a wallflower when all is said and done,†Boren said.
Boren's comments weren't the only ones that have drawn attention to the instability of the Big 12. In an interview with Tim Brando on Yahoo! radio, Missouri Coach Gary Pinkel said, “Obviously, we have some issues in our league. When you have Nebraska leave one year. Colorado leaves. Also now Texas A&M. Three really good football teams. … You know, we’ve got some issues. Without question there’s some issues that other leagues don’t have. You don’t hear anything about any other league in the country having these kind of problems. We all know where it starts.â€
