Part of me thinks our best hope is for a merge of the best of the MWC and CUSA West along with whatever is left behind in the Big XII. Now, whether that becomes a BCS conference is debatable.

Although most would love to see the "old swc" realign, we must face reality. The name of the game these days is money, especially tv money. SMU should take a serious look at itself, maybe even survey it's alumni, to determine at what level a committment is to be. This includes academics and athletics. Do we join the others who are signing high school students who are not prepared for college and can't do the work but can play football, basketball....Do we want to committ billions in the coming years to athletics and facilities? Or, do we take a stand with others and commit to being a university who has student athletes who are students first and align with those universities like us? SMU is so fortunate to have what they have and most don't realize it. Anyone notice the mass of humanity at College Station? Who wants that? Too big and impersonal.

It was actually thrown around at this point last year. Now, not so much. I just took it as him appeasing the CUSA people.
With the past two weeks of coordinated push from the university and alums, I actually don't worry about SMU's desire (as an institution) on wanting BCS access.
Whether we actually get BCS status, well...

Take a stand with schools like us? I guess you must be talking about the schools that are already CUSA like USM, ECU, Memphis, and UCF. Yes sir those are fine academic institutions . Now that makes a lot more sense than going into a BCS conference. Like you said, to many people at the games.

Also on Stampede, did you notice how much they showed McDermott in practice and in warm-ups.
Probably nothing.....or was it propaganda

I think we need a circle of champions - BCS Conference - Pony up funds to attract major programs that would garner TV revenue, ticket sales (travel well, local alumni), etc. Automatic qualification for SMU.

I did notice how often 15 was taking snaps during the lead up, at least in what they showed of the practices.
Certainly jibes with Jones' statements post-game that McDermott was taking 50 percent of the snaps during the week.

Absolutely not an idiot, but rather a pragmatist. The reality is that we are a real long shot to get into any AQ conference for many reasons to include a not very good football program ( on the rise) and a dismal basketball prgram at the current time both with hideous histories for the past 25 years. Given the right blend of schools that have the commitment to step up, there could be an excellent conference formed of regionally located schools that would be very attractive in every sense. This situation might be even further accelerated if the Big 12 loses UT, TT, Ok and OKS. Combine elements of MCW, CUSA and Big 12 and come up with a very attractive new conference. It appears to me that Turner is laying the foundation for SMU to lead the movement to form such a conference if the various situations and opportunities arises. Maybe it is time to get creative and be prepared to take charge of one's own future if the cards are stacked against you or you are not invited to the game.
