I was afraid Northwestern State was going to beat us...

In the band dept... :)

Their band was big and excellent. However, as good as they were, I'm going to have to give the W to the Mustang band for their excellent performance and song selection. Some of the best halftime music I've heard. Terrific job kids!!

Also, my KUDOS must also extended to SMU SID for the fireworks. A great addition! Unlike the Noid, black jerseys, third down thunder, the geldings, etc., etc., the fireworks are a tradition I can get behind.

Back in the day, I thought is was cool how our guy cheerleaders would run into the end zone and do pushups. Back in those days, we had to have some pretty stout cheerleaders, because by the end of some of those games, those guys were doing a TON of pushups.

With the fireworks, what if you made them consecutively larger or more elaborate (i.e. the more points, the bigger the BOOM!!!)? I think that would give both fans and the offense something to get progressively more amped up about (seeing the big stuff) as the game progresses.

Our band really does pump up the support in the stands and is playing and looking great this year.

Back in my day the male cheerleaders used to spell out SMU after scores, which I thought was cool. When did they quit doing that?

This is a not knock on our band, they are fine for their size, but that is just it. That Northwestern band (and other bands like them) make ours look and sound pathetic.

Again, it is not that our band is not the backbone of the support etc. But, we need to double the size.

We are a "jazz band" because we are small.

From what I understand, our band's size is contingent on money which is raised independently. The band is working to get more money. Statler can tell you more, but they are having some fundraisers for scholarships. Be sure to support those efforts.

The Mustang Band kicked [deleted] Saturday night. Their looks and sound were far from pathetic. They had the best performance and music selection that they have had in a long time. Northwestern State's band was one of the better visiting bands that we have had, but very high school-ish in comparison with the Mustang Band's performance. Loud does not necessarily equate to good.

I enjoyed their band, as I do most visiting bands. However, their best assets were size and decibels. Their playing was fine, but their marching wasn't crisp. Both of my older brothers were in marching bands like theirs, so I am certainly more used to that kind of marching band and it took me a while to get used to ours.

However, what I like about our band is their spirit. They aren't the loudest because they are on the small side, but for their size, they are definitely loud. Their music selection is different, their uniforms are unique, and their marching is spot on. I also love it when they start really getting into it and swaying back and forth in certain spots. In a nutshell, they are great musicians, and they are unique.

The 2 A&M games they played at the last few years, the visiting fans around me really responded to our band and really liked when they "got into it". I love seeing all the other bands, but I'm not trading the spirit and talent level in our band just so they can get bigger.

unfortunately to the casual observer, this is what leaves the most lasting impression

The space has been reserved for several years now, the band is having trouble raising the money to finish it out though. Donations are welcome.

The band makes due with what they have. Small numbers and not a lot of funding, but they still were able to give guys like me a small scholarship and for that I am extremely appreciative. Spirit and style always set us apart. There were a lot of times we got ovations from away crowds who had huge bands just because they like something different. Glad to see they have some ads out for the new band hall with some notable alums.

For the meager amount the band gets, they do wonders. Any figures out there for what it would take to say get a TCU sized band? How does every other school have such large bands?

THe school of music supports and encourages their students to be involved with the marching band. Not so with the M Band and Meadows. (at least it wasn't the case ten years ago)
