Big East CST Division?

Postby Topper » Sun Sep 18, 2011 7:31 pm

I wonder if the remaining Big East would go for a 6 team Central Time zone division with Iowa State going to their Eastern division (Assuming UCONN goes ACC??

I think that is the best scenario we could hope for at this time.

The best scenario we could hope for is that the Big XII and the Big East leftovers both try to rebuild, not try to combine into one all-encompassasing conference.
If the 5 schools from the Big XII and the 5 schools from the Big East try to get together, then that means there will be no more than 6 schools taken out of C-USA and the MWC, and maybe NONE. DAMNIT why does nobody get this. If TCU and Baylor get together is one conference, then they may blackball us out of it. But if they are competing against each other, desperate for schools, then we will get fought over for. We have made strides, yes, but we still aren't in a great position.

Something tells me that Missouri will wind up in he Big 10 or SEC and West Virginia could be the 14th SEC team or go to the ACC. The Big East would then be wise to scramble to put together at least a 12 team football conference by picking up the best of CUSA.

And where is Boise State in all of this? I actually feel sorry for them and Fresno State. Fresno has great attendance, a great coach, and they have beaten the pants off of a lot of top programs. Boise has been as good as anybody for many years.

I think WVU will end up in either the ACC or SEC, too. Frankly, you and I should be saying our prayers that happens. But long-story-short if we find ourselves fighting with schools like Houston, UCF, ECU, Boise State, BYU, Tulsa, and all others available for one of say, 3 or 4 spots than we are in trouble.

Wv is not acc material
Maybe sec but hard to argue they bring much to the table

B10 options for 16 just took a hit, Pitt and cuse being top candidates.

Assume rutgers missouri to be top remaining candidates. Plus nd. Who else? Isu is aau, and that is supposedly a high criteria, but no b10 like rep

The prob w b12 leftovers is that it does nothing for fb realistically (isu, bu, ku, ksu?) and travel sucks.

A b12-beast leftover party to 16 might have some leverage.

East regional and west regional

Maybe not a top 4 conf but get enough bargaining chips to threaten big4 w lawsuit

Some grouping of (4 ea):

Smu

Boise

Wyo
Csu/isu

Ku

Not that I really feel too sorry for them. But TCU is the team that really is getting hosed here. I mean, the MWC was on the cusp of BCS status and Utah and BYU leave. TCU lands on its feet apparently in the BE just to see it implode losing three charter members. I appears to me that they're back to square one. They're still in good position to be in a good place after the dance cards fill up, but I'm sure there are some frayed nerves in Ft. Worth right now. My view is that the best move would be for the BE leftovers (Rutgers, Louisville, Cincy, USF , TCU, (and perhaps WVU), to combine with the Big XII leftovers (Baylor, KU, KSU, Mo., ISU) and then to decide whether to go for 12 teams (which means one addition) or 16 teams which means 5 additions. I suspect that the hoops division will split off with Georgetown, DePaul, Marquette, ND, Seton Hall, Providence, St. Johns, Villanova (with enough teams to get an auto-bid to the Tournament) to form a new conference with Xavier, UMass, and perhaps Richmond or VCU.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

They are going to be fine...they have taken the steps and will land on their feet...

I really would love SMU, TCU, baylor, UH, to all be in same conference again...

Don't kill off the Big 12 so quickly. Remember that they are a BCS conference and keep that status until at least 2014. I would assume that if that status is lost, they will sue the BCS and the other conferences and tie it up in courts for years. Could be fun. Not sure why the remaining Big 12 members of Baylor, Kansas, K State, and Iowa State(Missouri is going to the SEC or Big Ten) don't go hunting to add new members. I would look to add schools like TCU/SMU/Houston in Texas, Memphis, make a run at Colorado State/Air Force/Boise St/BYU and get back to at least 12. It is a whole lot harder to lose BCS status that way especially based on their ranking system. Results from the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 regular seasons will be evaluated and the 2011 computations will be made according to the conference's membership on Dec. 4, 2011. The Big 12 is in much better shape to not only lock in its status as a BCS conference until at least 2014 but it will be very difficult to remove a conference from AQ status. Expect the Big East to grab EC/UCF/ and steal from the MAC. With 6 major conferences in place, the WAC/Sunbelt/CUSA/MWC/MAC will be in a very difficult position to be powerful enough to break into the status quo. If you want to be a BCS school you have to be in a BCS conference and the Big 12 is still a BCS conference no matter what UT and the other boys do.

That's a good line up of schools if you talk Missouri into staying and drop Memphis. Memphis adds nothing to that group. IMO it is important that the big12-xx continue to exist and just back fill to adjust for the schools that they are losing. Keeping AQ status is a lot easier than obtaining it.

West Virginia is going to the SEC. Bank on it. Thats why the other two schools, Pitt and SYC., are already leaving the big east for the ACC.

The ONLY chance the Big 12 has of survival is to add a couple of Texas programs and some of the better Big East leftovers. I still don't know if that is going to be enough to save the league though. I could see a Big 12 that looks like this:

Big 12 North

Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State, Cincinnati, Louisville

Big 12 South

Baylor, SMU, TCU, Houston, South Florida, Tulsa

Or if they wanted to be bold and get to 16 teams:

Big 12 North

Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Iowa State, Boise State, Air Force, Louisville, Cincinatti

Big 12 South

Baylor, SMU, TCU, Houston, South Florida, Tulsa, Southern Miss, Central Florida

I think there is SERIOUS reason to worry for TCU. They had a magical run last year but they look like a 4 loss team this year and even though they were playing a creampuff, still didn't sellout their game against La-Monroe (32,000 attendance). TCU has earned a right to have a place at the table but right now schools and conferences are looking for BIG NAMES and I'm sorry, TCU is not a big name. Much like Boise State, TCU is thought of as a neat novelty but not really a program that brings any level of stability to a major conference. That is why they need to realize they need a buddy. Whether that is some combination of SMU, Baylor, Houston or all three they need another Texas anchor in order to make them more attractive. I think they are scrambling today.
