The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...Lets assume the Big XII and Big East get gutted. The Pac 16 with UT, OU, TT, and OSU becomes a reality. It looks like this will happen. The ACC 16 also looks more and more like it will happen. SMU's best chance to enter a BCS conference lies with either a rebuilt Big XII or rebuilt Big East conference, not the two trying to make it work together.
When these things take place, the remaining Big XII schools, with or without Mizzou, decide that their best chance to remain a BCS conference is to rebuild, not join the MWC or try to stretch and include USF, or a West Virginia that will probably be going elsewhere anyway. They immediately place calls to BCS-worthy programs at BYU, BSU, and TCU, promising BCS status to their conference should they join. Since OU and OSU are gone, Tulsa and their consisitent program will get a call. Somewhere along the way SMU may get the call. But lets say we don't. The same thing happens in the East. If WVU is still not in, then they do the same thing, along with USF, and perhaps a Louisville and Cincy. They will be forced to essentially bring in CUSA almost as a whole. This would give SMU mulitple opportunites to join a BCS conference, and would probably actually clean up regional issues.
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...If tx goes acc, the acc might consider smu. We have academic status commensurate w acc and acc teams need a travel pair to visit for non fb. Uconn is pushing hard but they would have gotten the invite already if acc wasn't waiting on tx. Acc is probably smartest to keep is east coast though. Should never have invited bc. Now Pitt?
Acc to 14 or 16 makes is less likely sec raids acc. Missou looking more attractive but the three closest schools to missou are ark tenn uk. All 7:30 drives away. Not exactly sec friendly. Neither is Aggieland. Are tigers southerners? I don't think so. Vandy wants another private. If sec decides on 16, maybe we are in. Who else? is wv more attractive geographically than smu? How does sec get to 16? missou (14), wv? PAC 16 might decide smu looks better than tech. They have to take ou/osu pair, but I doubt tech is a requirement of tx. Same issue if tx to acc. We are ranked 62 in usnews. Tech 140-50s? All other accs are in top 80. NewConf16 w b12 left overs big east and cusa will Be good enough to not be ignored: 4 quads: Bu tcu Smu hou (tu) Boise afa csu wyo isu (pick 4) isu ku ksu cincy louis (pick 4) SoMiss-memphis UCF-USF (both pairs are rivals) (tcu Boise cincy louis usf have all played in bcs bowls. Ksu ? Ku missed it bc of great b12 yr. I only remember m bishop ksu losing to ATM when they were the best damn team in USA bar none) You could throw Tulsa in tx or central quad. Uab or ecu could backfill southeast quad Nm or utep could backfill mountain quad. Wyo afa csu is good regional rivalry. Not real high on wyo or csu lately but they are regional to mw. That's not a terrible 16. Any talk of including tx state or ut sa or others is stupid. There are enough more established schools out there to piece together.
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...It's great to hear fans that have some hope for us in this realignment mess. Our coach last week at the luncheon said we would be left out. Maybe it's true but throw me a bit of hope! It's not over til it's over...
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...Anyway we can keep the vard???
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...
While I appreciate your optimistic attitude, this is all headed to four sixteen team superconferences. The Big XII and Big East will not get BCS status when the new contract is signed in two (or is it three years). Realistically, the best SMU can do is get a merger with the MWC and CUSA get up to 24 teams with three 8 team divisions so that they have some clout in the NCAA if it isn't dissolved.
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...the rumors i am hearing or that the super confrences wont last it is just a set up to get rid rid of the BCS and it will all come down to 8 confrences with 10 teams each i keep hearing this
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...
from where? this is really the 1st time i have heard anyone even imagine this scenario "There ain't nothing you can't solve with one more beer"
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...Word is the BCS types will get tired of money. That's what I'm hearing.

Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...
I heard that as well- said they were going to form the 'altruisistic conference'. ![]() GO PONIES!!!
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...i still dont see how a 16 team conf can work not every one can play each other how fair is that when deciding who the champion is of the confrence .Wasnt the wac a 16 team conf how did they do it
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...This morning on The Ticket, they said they believe four 20 team conferences are coming.
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...The legal ramifications of only having four 16 team superconferences will be absolutely riveting to watch. Some decent programs are going to be on the outside looking in and those schools will not go down without a fight. Realistically, the best thing to do in order to keep everyone happy is the four 20 team superconference scenario. If this is the outcome then I think SMU has a really good chance of being involved. If they decide to stay at 64 we are out, although we might be able to band togther with the best of the rest and force the BCS cartel to include an additional superconference with the stipulation that the conference winner must be in the top 12 in the BCS in order to qualify for a BCS bowl, otherwise the conference would forfeit their automatic birth. I really don't see why they wouldn't agree to this. But who knows at this point. All bets are off.
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...I'm not so sure. A lot of teams went down without a fight when the BCS was formed and really this is just more concentration resulting from the creation of the BCS. The BCS is the cause-conference realignment is the effect. I really don't know why a lawsuit hasn't been filed a decade ago when the case was much better. Any astute observer of college football could have seen this happening from the day the BCS was formed.

Re: The best chance for SMU to join a BCS conference now...
No its not. I'm sorry, but that is all a little too neat to happen. Besides, the BCS is operating fine right now with 6 conferences, they may actually solve some problems by keeping 6. The Orlando Sentinal is reporting that the BCS will keep 6 conferences.
