University of Memphis keeps defense simple
New coordinators now preparing for SMU

As Galen Scott prepared to step in front of the television cameras and tape recorders Monday at the University of Memphis's Athletic Office Building, Tiger football coach Larry Porter interceded.

He wanted to give one of his co-defensive coordinators some playful grief ahead of Saturday's Conference USA opener against SMU, one of the league's highest-scoring teams under the direction of head coach and offensive guru June Jones.

''Last week he called a great game,'' Porter said of Scott. ''Now he's got to go up against June Jones.''

Scott laughed ... briefly.

I remember how un-fun it was knowing the team was going to lose. This Galen guy is loving it also, I'm sure.
