Re: How Big 12 was formed?Texas was in the dumpster football wise and still smarted over the fact that SMU and Houston had outrecruited them a few years earlier. Their stratedy was to neuter as many Texas schools as they could in order to gain a competitive advantage. I remember that the smaller schools offered a very lucrative receipt sharing deal to UT if they would preserve the SWC, but they turned it down. So I am not sure that money was the first thing on their mind although they have proven to be greedy as heck.

Re: How Big 12 was formed?"We knew Texas had to meet with its board of regents and I assume that they did that within the week. So we had a conference call that was set up within ten days and all of the Big Eight presidents were on the conference call, and quite frankly, we did not know who was on for the Southwest Conference."

Re: How Big 12 was formed?Dang, I never knew that Texas was so behind our downfall. I talked to an alum yesterday who told me they were also partially responsible for sicking the NCAA on us. I don't think most people my age have the malaise agains UT that older folks do, but when I hear stuff like this I see why y'all hate them!
Re: How Big 12 was formed?
There was a law professor at UT named Charles Alan Wright. He was their faculty rep with the NCAA and he was mean and vindictive as h#$%. He got all in a stir when SMU signed David Stanley because the horns badly wanted that kid (yes, the one who figured so prominently in our downfall). Wright was a UT football fanatic and I have no doubt that he worked closely with Dodds to keep UT out of the same hot water we found ourselves in. TCU and Houston also faced some pretty serious penalties in the decade leading up to the end of the SWC.
Re: How Big 12 was formed?Great read! ... I finally got around to it just now.
I saw a movie that came out this past December, and you know, while it didn't go into it too deeply... I seem to recall that the NCAA showed up on SMU's campus the Monday following an un-ranked Mustang's team historic road win over #2 Texas. ... There really was a part of me that wanted to stick it to UT with the movie, but I felt that was bad for business and bad for our program. Just tell the story, don't go into whiny-baby mode and this thing will rock. And do well for the school. Don't play the sour grapes card. Anyway, as a filmmaker I had to fight myself as a fan, because the fan part of me really wanted to hammer home what I have long dubbed, "the burnt orange thread" running through SMU's downfall... I will note, though, we didn't do ourselves any favors in the "full of ourselves" department. Someday, when I get the chance to tell the SMU in the late '70s/early '80s story as an HBO (or somesuch) mini-series, UTexas will get it's due. (And, frankly, what a badass series that will be.) ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
Re: How Big 12 was formed?
Thad, your professional and approach served college football, including SMU. Trying to pull others, including other offenders, into the pool would have weakened the impact and value of the story. Thanks. Pony Up
