Big 12 looking outside of state to expand

According to the DMN

Any Big 12 hopes of SMU, TCU and Houston took a public hit Saturday.
During an interview on ESPN’s College GameDay, interim Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas suggested that the conference would look outside the Lone Star State for expansion candidates. Asked what the conference would consider in expansion, Neinas listed location as a key.
“There appears to be some resistance to adding another team from Texas,” Neinas said.
SMU had openly stated its goal of joining the Big 12 or another conference with a BCS automatic qualifying bid. With the chaos in the Big East, TCU has emerged a possible expansion possibility for other leagues. Houston has drawn support from Texas legislators, as has SMU.
Neinas said the second priority was “adding a high-quality football program. We need to maintain quality.”
The proposed granting of Tier 1 TV rights (essentially broadcast) and Tier 2 (cable) is a “general agreement” between the presidents and chancellors, Neinas said. Missouri, which may be a candidate for SEC expansion, must have the granting of rights approved by its board of curators, Neinas said.
Neinas repeated his desire to restore a sense of brotherhood in a league that has been on the verge of fracturing twice in 15 months.
“My top priority is to create a better sense of team and a better sense of trust between the institutions that make up the conference,” Neinas said.

Well, he did say there appears to be some resistance...all about the phrasing; definitely not an intransigent position.

The only way we can get into the Big12 is through legislative influence, who are they key legislatures that we should be addressing? UT wants to be the only school in Texas if possible. They already shed TCU, UH, Rice, and SMU when the Big12 was formed. The original plan was to keep all schools. Wins do not matter, only dollar value of the team and political influence matter. Since we are still growing and small value wise, our only hope is to get legislatures on board to influence Texas. That is how Baylor survived.

Personally, I wish we could avoid the Big12 drama and get into the ACC or a rebuilt Big East. MWC is kind of a wash.

sad that the whorns have such influence. Having a conference where fans could drive to most of the games-adding TCU, Houston, SMU to the geographic mix in this case-is what builds and maintains loyalty and strength in the conference. That's something that is lost on everyone about the SEC. Even Ole Miss-a school with an enrollment not astronomically bigger than ours-travels well, as do the other schools.

Having far-flung new members will do nothing to add to conference stability to the Big XII

Texas is a big state as is California, and the Pac 12 has USC, UCLA, U of California and Stanford....whats the problem? All 4 teams co-exist and thrive as they have for many years and have great interstate competition and all can drive to each other games, as well as fly.....Texas has many TV sets as does California....Why is the Big 12 so snobby?

Texas has the power, and wants nothing to do with the private schools from the old SWC or Houston.

No one PAC team has the power and influence that Texas does.

it's pretty clear Texas will do what they can to avoid "empowering" TCU, SMU & Houston. Texas went through some tough times when we were all competitive programs. TCU has regained their football competitiveness and SMU and Houston are not far behind. The last thing Texas wants is for us to be able to recruit on a more level playing field.

In Texas' defense, however, I can certainly understand why they don't want to share equally with programs that have a fraction of the fan base Texas does. I expect OU is right there with Texas on that issue.

I think they look to BYU, Louisville, West Virginia (who auditions tonight) and possibly even Cincy
