Dallas Crowds

Postby RE Tycoon » Mon Sep 26, 2011 10:41 pm

We're not the only ones, Cowboys might have the most disinterested crowd in the NFL. Golf clap on what will probably be the game winning FG.

Must be a Dallas thing.

At least when we win ugly we do it by more than a TD. 6 Field Goals to beat the Skins? How excited can you possibly get?

Um, considering your starting QB was dealing with serious pain and probably shouldn't have played, your starting WR that had 3 TD's the week before was out, you have 3 rookies on the offensive line, and Romo was throwing the ball to a bunch of practice squad guys.....

I think you can get excited about that. A division win is huge regardless of how it looks. Truly gutsy and courageous effort by #9.

um, you're just now figuring this out about the "Dallas fan"?

It starts at the top, really. Someone on sports talk radio recently was talking about how when Pittsburgh built a new stadium, they focused out how to make Heinz field loud. Of course when Jerry built Jerryworld, he was more interested in what kind of beer to serve in the Level V suites and other types of "showpiece" amenities. Oooh, it has a giant tv. Wow. That makes it a really tough venue for opponents to come in and win, doesn't it? At least Jerryworld is a nicer echo chamber/mausoleum than that concrete abomination that was Texas Stadium. So that's something.

I was thinking the same thing last night watching the game, wondering how 91,000 people could be so quiet.

I have a couple problems seeing this as apples to apples:

1) Ticket prices at the Death Star keep out many of the "die-hards" that would get in there and stir things up.

2) The circus atmosphere keeps even true football fans from being able to focus on the game. Between the vidga-board, the go-go dancers, its easy to forget there's even a game being played.

3) The game last night was horribly boring, until the last few minutes - similar to the UTEP game.

We keep circling on the attendance/crowd noise issue, and I think it boils down to one thing - wins. If we keep winning, the numbers improve. If we keep winning, we will eventually have bigger name teams on our turf.

As attendance grows, and the wins continue, more younger alums come back. If all these things happen, the stadium gets louder. The next thing you know, the blue-hairs are moving out of your section, and we are no longer the ones getting dirty looks for standing & yelling on 3rd down. The scale will tip in the other direction, and those still sitting down being quiet will be the ones getting dirty looks. Soon after that, the slacks & loafers fans that don't appreciate a true college football atmosphere will give up their seats.

Signs of progress are being made. Our little group in 106 has gone from having the police sent down to squelch us to several rows all around us really getting into the game. Many of the givers of nasty looks have left or changed seats. It's progress. We still get looks on occasion, but its much better than it was 3 years ago.

I am realizing this process will probably take YEARS, even if we were to somehow win-out the next 2 seasons. We are crippled by our lack of success and a small student population. The ONLY way this changes at SMU is to keep winning.

Nailed it with stadium design and ticket prices. The crazies can't afford to go to Cowboy games, and that place is a monstrosity with distractions all over the place. As bad as Texas Stadium was, the crowd and noise made a difference.

Not entirely true. There are plenty of crazies in the party pass section. It's funny to see them rush in when the doors open. Its like watching a $99 flat screen sale at Target. Or the buffet line at Taco Cabana.

Dallas Crowds

Jerry specifically said one of the things he wanted was to match the acoustics of Texas Stadium. Which, btw, is incredibly stupid because that place sounded like crap. You will note that the new place sounds vaguely similar.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Stadium is too big to hear noise and is full of corporate sponsors. All true fans are in the party pass area and the upper deck. They can't be heard.
