UPDATE: The same names continue to be repeated as possibilities for the Big East when it eventually decides to officially expand. But, one program which has been mentioned as a possible candidate may not be according to Mark Blaudschun of the Boston Globe.
"According to sources familiar with the process, but not authorized to talk about negotiations, the Big East is focusing on Southern Methodist, Central Florida, Navy, and Temple as the primary targets for football," Blaudschun wrote. "Air Force is also being considered, but is a remote possibility."
The Falcons were initially considered one of the main targets according to earlier reports, but it appears the Big East isn't as concerned with acquiring two-thirds of the Commander-in-Chief gauntlet.

UPDATE: In a move that surprised absolutely nobody, the Big East Conference voted in favor of pursuing expansion.
Multiple programs have been discussed at potential targets. Air Force and Navy reportedly remain the top options (and what a game this weekend). ESPN.com's Andy Katz also mentioned Central Florida, Temple and SMU as possibilities.
SMU is the new trendy name recently added to the list, but ESPN's Ivan Maisel believes there is good reason why the Mustangs are now being included:

MONEY LOCATION AND HISTORY are on our side plus anyone over 30 knows what SMU was about before the DP and not just what we are capable of but what we will do in the years to come

Easy fix to the 2014 question...If conference loses BCS standing, exit penalty will be reduced from X to X.

Ivan Maisel
Logistics of SMU's addition to Big East
"Nearly a quarter-century after the NCAA meted out the death penalty to SMU, not only are the Mustangs 4-1 and coming off an Iron Skillet upset of No. 20 TCU, but the Big East reportedly discussed SMU as a potential new member. SMU doesn't have the assets of a TCU -- motivated fan base, a decade of success -- but SMU has the quirky genius of coach June Jones, a recently refurbished stadium and a big TV market. In today's college sports, that's enough. "
As long as you have TCu, cincy and uconn its defn a bcs conference....

That sounds contradictory. We've always had the history, but no one cared about it for the last 25 years. Location and money have been there for the last 25 years too. How does that make us trending up?
I would have thought something like a recent bowl win that caught national attention, a trip to the conference championship, and a victory over a top 25 team would cause us to be trending up. Even the Bush Library and moderate success in basketball help our overall athletic department brand. Not stuff that has been there all along that no one cared about until Thad made a film about it. (Thanks Thad)

That makes more sense to me.
