Common belief notwithstanding, NCAA redshirt rules state that any amount of participation in a competition (even one play in a football game) will trigger the use of a season of eligibility, and therefore that athlete so played may not redshirt that year.

It's on Wikipedia, so it must be true.

Did he play in a game before the UCLA game last year or was that the season opener?

Medical redshirt is a completely different rule. Actually Keenum got a Medical Waiver for a 6th year which is a third completely different Rule. Padron doesn't qualify for any of the 3 Rules
