If I were the SEC, I would take offense at this attitude. Not like the SEC is desperate and can't get anyone else.
http://sports.yahoo.com/top/news;_ylt=A ... 2-missouriMissouri hoped to join the Big Ten last year but the league instead chose Nebraska.
The university official said the Big Ten remains Missouri’s top choice but that conference “has no interest.â€â€œThat’s what’s left,†the official said, referring to the SEC. The official, who is familiar with school discussions involving conference affiliation, spoke on condition of anonymity because the school has not commented publicly about its intentions.

probably some academic department head on the board of regents (or their equivalent) that doesn't understand football.

This guy is thinking the same thing I am.
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011 ... s_fav.htmlThose actions make an Associated Press story Wednesday out of Missouri all the more bizarre. The AP quoted an anonymous Missouri official as saying the school hopes to join the SEC but preferred a Big Ten offer that never came.
"That's what's left," the Missouri official said, referring to the SEC.
Talk about a clumsy PR way to win support from the SEC, whose large ego doesn't like the appearance of accepting leftovers, especially the Big Ten's. Was this simply one Missouri official's opinion, a last-ditch plea to the Big Ten, or an attempt to sabotage moving into the SEC?

I think they said that because geography wise that is where they fit best even more so than the Big 12 or SEC. Illinois would be a natural rival.

Stupid to say that, but I don't think Missouri has made it any secret that they want in the Big 10. Their chancellor and governor were practically begging publicly through the media to get the 12th spot last year.
And honestly, they would fit better in the Big 10, but if there is a spot available for them in the SEC, they have to take it. You are guaranteeing security for your school forever, or you can gamble and hope you are a good enough chess player to land spot #14 or #15 in the Big 10 after Notre Dame has finally caved. And while that spot would probably go to Missouri, it wouldn't if something unexpected happened--like UT or VT having a change in their thinking and wanting to join.
SEC isn't stupid. They are aware of the situation that Missouri is in. They would probably prefer that their boosters not be out talking to the media though.

Mizzou doesn't have the votes- at least not yet. Big 10 isn't going to offer. UT willing to place restrictions on Tier 3 content for a period of 6 years. I'm betting MU stays, doesn't go anywhere.
Big 12: Keeps MU, adds BYU.
SEC: Stays at 13 for foreseeable future.
Big 10: Stands pat.
Beast East: TCU stays; add Temple, UCF, SMU
No conference realignment Armageddon this month, SMU gets a high-chair at the adults table at least for a year or two.
This will all probably change in ten minutes.
