Gilbert Eligibility

Postby huskerpony » Fri Oct 07, 2011 12:52 am

ESPN story says 2 years.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/sto ... t-transfer

A junior, Gilbert would still have two years of eligibility to play.

Yes we know what the story says we went over it in the other thread. He would have to sit out one of those if he transfered to another FBS school, if he stayed at Texas or went FCS he would get to play both.

Unless.....he graduated in 3 years from UT and received waiver from NCAA to not have to sit out. Any body think it suspicious about the surgery that came AFTER the benching? QBs like pitchers could probably always find something that needed a cleanup, etc. Would have been bad for a kid to lose a year after 1 game and 1 quarter. How convenient Ut with all their resources and medical staff overlooked an injury to their QB until demotion!

Seeing that GG has been spending quite a bit of time looking around at other schools, it would appear that he lacks the dedication to graduate in three years.

Three years sounds short but if you count kids showing up at UT after graduating in December of what should be their senior year in high school and then taking 6 hours each summer session you have a guy who is probably in his fourth year academically. Not only that kids can knock out a lot of hours of college credit in high school and Lake Travis is one of the better schools in the state academically and athletically. Our Randy McKinion graduated in 3 from Syracuse and Braden Smith graduated in 3 from SMU. Don't tell me these players and their parents don't have an escape plan if things don't work out. You have to be smart to play the NCAA game to win on and off the field!

I'm not sure how I feel about GG yet anyway. Of course, the idea of having the former national high school player of the year under center at the hilltop appeals to me. And the kid does have National Title Game experience. Both things are incredible feathers in the young man's hat.

However, can he play? Obviously, his competition at UT will be stiffer than what he faces here at SMU. And I am confident in June Jones to bring out the best in him. Perhaps a new environment will work wonders. Worth a shot, at least.
Jones said he would probably reach out to Patterson "after he settled down a little bit." Then Jones laughed.

Agree, worth a shot. I am not the biggest fan of the star system in recruiting, but he was a 5 star recruit, meaning that there is some talent in there. I have watched very little of him outside of the NC Game vs. Bama. I am curious if his skills will translate better or worse with the Run N Shoot.

I am just worried. If GG couldnt cut it in the Big 12, how is he going to handle himself against SEC competition when we get that invite?

True, I hadn't quite thought of that. Now we definitely should walk away from the GG thing.

Mccoy would be standing on the sidelines at SMU. So would Ash. That is not a knock on them it is just that Ut has been asking their QB's to do a lot more than pass since VY played. They want a guy who can beat you with their feet and can convert 3rd downs with scrambling. SMU just requires the qb to stand or float in the pocket and pass. TCU is mising Dalton and his ability to convert 3rd downs with his feet. The present TCU qb would be much more successful in the SMU offense since he is a passer and not a runner. I am sure there are many programs who would be glad to have the number 1 qb recruit and gatorade player of the year on campus to see if they could coach him and get his confidence back. I am sure he wants to prove himself but also prepare for the NFL. A former NFL QB and head coach at SMU named June Jones should fit the bill better than a slick recruiter named Mack Brown.

Max Emfinger of scout.com tweet: "Former Longhorn QB Garrett Gilbert was in rebuilding in Austn and will transfer to SMU. With a medical redshirt, he'll have 2 years at SMU."

Welp, that answers that. Hopefully when he plays in 2013 he doesn't suck.

People say this two years to play at SMU crap but no one can provide a case where this has ever happened before. We have only founds cases where the exact opposite has happened. Only thing we have seen is a player thinks it is going to happen and after their 5th year of eligibility the NCAA says "No Soup For You"
