Jerry Jones and the SEC

Postby Topper » Sat Oct 08, 2011 12:48 am

Has anyone heard anything about Jerry Jones putting in a word for us with the SEC? Obviously he is especially tight with Arkansas and, no doubt, a call from his office would be answered by any SEC president. Or governor of an SEC state for that matter.

Jerry Jones is a member of the Circle of Champions. His son went to SMU Law.

At last, an outspoken billionaire SMU can trust.

Actually, I've heard that he isn't all that well liked in Fayetteville. You see him at the Arky games in his stadium, you don't see him at ones in Arkansas.

I will say this: I sat right next to Jerry Jones, Jr's girlfriend in my English class.
Oh My God.....

I imagine Jones could profit quite well with SMOOO in the SEC in more ways than one. I guess he's hop'n he'll get a big SMU game at his stadium.

Didn't know he was a member of the Circle of Champions, either. Hmmm. How interesting as the plot thickens!

Most important to Jerry Jones will be the possibility of moving the SEC championship game to his stadium. This will only be possible with a team from Dallas-Fort Worth having a presence in the SEC, as it otherwise appears to be a random location. In the battle between SMU and TCU, one hopes that his existing connection will come to our aid.

I'm not sure about that. I think the presence of A&M would open up Jerryworld or Reliant stadium to an SEC championship game. They have played in New Orleans and Atlanta many times with no SEC team in either metro area.

UGA controls Atlanta, LSU controls Nola. A&M has a considerably bigger presence in Houston than Dallas. You think JJ wouldn't love the SECCG at his palace?

Based on distribution of their alumni mag, 25% of their Texas alums live in Houston area, 20% in Dallas. And yes, Jerry would love to have the SEC championship game here. But I still don't think SMU would add much to that equation for him.

What if he could host SMU-Alabama or SMU-Tennessee every year? Then it starts to...

I think we're all getting a little ahead of ourselves. Though it's fun to dream. IRS can't get us for that!

All these ADs are talking with conferences & many of the calls are no more than courtesy calls & that may, most likely, be us. It's a long, long shot for us anyway & it ain't worth really thinking about it until it's done.

However, if we were all betting men, which we are, it looks more like a merger btw CUSA & MWC or the best of each conference coming together to form a new conference.

Agreed. This is like buying a lottery ticket and imagining "what if?"

Still, what if Mizzou wavers on the SEC? Also, does the SEC want Mizzou if they've perpetually got a wandering eye towards the Big Ten? 13 teams scheduling wise is a nightmare. None of the current SEC schools are going to allow a school from their state to be admitted- that rules out GT, Clemson, FSU, Miami, Louisville, etc. VT is the most logical choice for the conference but they may be not be able to leave ACC politically- I could see it happening but it appears to be a longshot. Also, the ACC exit fee is pretty darn high now.

If Mizzou/SEC doesn't pan out, I think KU gets the next call from the SEC. I would be stunned, shocked, and absolutely thrilled if this SEC/SMU talk has some legs. It seems waaaay to far-fetched though. It would be far and away the biggest shock of all this conference realignment, nothing else would even come remotely close.

Navy Crimson is right, of course. But it still seems to me that the SEC would truly beneift to have a regular presence in Dallas above and beyond the "classic" games at Jerryworld. The media attention here would be invaluable as would the corporate sponsorship opportunities.

Can't see MO waivering - unless they're out of their mind - which is always the possibility.

The SEC represents stability & $$$ & no one is going to turn that down. More $$$ than the Big10 or whatever they're called this year.

In a nutshell, it's up to the SEC & they ain't shelling out invitations unless they KNOW there will be acceptance by whomever is invited.
