Student Section Question

Has the student section been more involved/enthusiastic at the games this year? I was a student from 2005-09, and I was always a part of a small group of rabid student fans at each game. Has the team's success translated to more involvement from the student body?

I'm really glad to hear it. I just about jumped through the TV and pushed Demyron Martin over the goaline when we went 6-6 under Bennett and didn't get a bowl invite because we found a way to give the final game to Rice.

Students have done very well this year. Still need more but they have been enthusiastic and for the most part stayed until the end.

It's better. Back when I was in school the student section refused to yell stuff (chant "strip club") at the UTEP coach after he got busted at that strip club with players or whatever it was. It was pathetic. No punches should ever be pulled from a student section at football game, especially with ammo like that. I no longer sit there but I hear it is sooo much better than it was even 2-3 years ago.

It has been better the last couple years. Now the trick is to keeping that attendance and getting the young alumni at the games.

I'm in 124, so right next to them. They are definitely better.

I agree with the comments above. As an '07 grad, I can safely say I was one of very few students to attend all the home games and follow the program during those down years. In the last two seasons, though, the student support has increased dramatically - at every game I've been to this year, the student section has been very full, even going up into the upper bowl. Loud and boisterous as well.

After World War I our nation is said to have lost a generation of young men, and SMU similarly lost a generation of fans after the DP. Hopefully the current students will support the team after they graduate, and as the program continues to rise I expect there to be much greater alumni support in the 22-35 yr. old age bracket. Of course continued success will also bring back more of the older alums who have drifted since the 80s.

I seem to get a call at least once a month if not more from SMU asking for money. I about graduated 2 1/2 years ago. Those phone calls should also involve some mention of SMU football tickets/games.

I've seen a huge increase in student turnout since the beginning of '09.

as much as it has imporved - when the sophamore housing gets put in place that will have a HUGE positive effect on the games. Double our on campus students means a big increase in football and basketball.

Guess it depends on how soon new dorms are built. I thought Turner originally wanted it by this year.

It might not give as big a boost as you might think. For greeks, the guys most likely live in the on campus house their sophomore year. A lot of the sophomore girls are already living in the panalenic house on campus. Granted no everyone is greek. Hopefully this does have a positive effect.
