New SMU offensive line coach Bob Palcic (pronounced "PÁL-sick") visited with PonyFans.com Monday to discuss a number of topics, including what factors played in to his decision to join the SMU staff, his initial goals when he starts working with the offensive line during the Mustangs' spring workouts, what he looks for in his offensive linemen and his thoughts about the three Outland Trophy winners he has coached.

Enjoy!

Great interview. I like this guy -- he comes across as a very genuine teacher. As young as our offensive line is going to be, that's going to be a huge help. We need a real teacher.

Really enjoyed that. There is no doubt in my mind that Palcic is an outstanding coach and mentor, and I have faith that he will develop our O-Line.

Good questions PP! He will be a great OL coach and should help out immensely this next year with our new guys. I just hope he can get out and recruit some new OL recruits/candidates too.

So did Blake McJ officially get cleared for another year?

Yes, McJunkin said he has been assured of another year, because he never redshirted and therefore doesn't have to go through the red tape hassle of applying for an extra year based on a medical hardship waiver.

Also, Palcic said he will recruit west of the DFW Metroplex (I'm not sure the exact boundaries of the region), and while head coach June Jones ultimately gives the thumps-up or thumbs-down on offering any recruit, Palcic also will consult heavily on any offensive line candidates discovered by other coaches in other recruiting regions.

McJunkin played last year so a regular redshirt is not allowed. I wish someone would clarify how he gets the extra year. I see no way that he qualifies under standing rules.

Please know that I am elated that he gets another year, but I still wish someone would cite the rule that allows him to do so.

He only played in the first game. He's fine for a redshirt, I think.

Welcome, Coach!

Participation chart shows he played through TCU, but that does not matter. One play burns a redshirt. From time played he does qualify for medical hardship but he displayed no indication that he could not play. He dressed every game and appeared ready to play on the sideline. I sit near the bench and was able to observe him. For a medical hardship you need to be unable to play.

I have heard he is cleared for next year and I am glad he is, but again, and I have been asking this over and over, where is the rule that says he gets the year? I am just trying to be educated.

The chart is wrong, he never played after the a$m game.

Everything still applies. One play burns a redshirt. He obviously fits the requirements of medical hardship from a playing standpoint but from observation he does not from a physical standpoint. Again, I am trying to find the rule that cites he is eligible for my own educational purpose. Everything I read says he is not due to the fact that he was able to play. And please believe me when I say that I do want him eligible.

He had a high ankle sprain so its conceivable that he had diminished range of motion all year long, and possibly even now, which is pretty easy to objectively measure. If they did computerized ROM and strength testing all year long they have quantifiable evidence of impairment. He'd still look normal walking around , be able to work out etc but if his ROM and whatever else they chose to measure added up to a % of whole body impairment, tough to refute.

Thank you. That at least is an explanation. If I had been SMU however I certainly would not have had him dressed out on the sideline up and about working with Coach Klemm. But again thanks for at least some sort of reasoning.
