Thomas Ashcraft making strong impression

Postby PonyPride » Mon Jun 17, 2013 3:27 pm

I ran into Ben Gottschalk today. He said he and transfer offensive tackle Thomas Ashcraft worked out together Monday morning.

The two did bench press with increasing weight, five sets of four repetitions each. The first was with 315 pounds, followed by a set with 335, then 365, then 385, and finally a set with 405.

AFTER those sets, they decided to test themselves to find out how many reps they could do with the standard 225 pounds, the amount the NFL uses to test strength at the Combine and at Pro Days around the country.

For the sake of comparison, Torlan Pittman did 42 reps, Aaron Davis did 34 and Taylor Reed did 29 at SMU's Pro Day ... but that wasn't after a heavy chest/arms workout.

Gottschalk did 20 reps Monday morning — an impressive total considering the muscle fatigue brought on by the previous five sets.

Ashcraft did ... 35.

Whoa.

Just to be clear- you mention him as an offensive tackle- I believe he played guard at Texas. Will he play OT here?

My understanding is that he is going to work at tackle, at least at first.

wow. Having a really solid OL starter drop in out of nowhere might be a really important thing for this team. that depth will be very needed - and if Snead gets an extra hole and Gilbert an extra second here and there it will be huge.

Any other UT guys getting tired of Austin?

I rarely lift anything heavier than 12 ounces anymore, but that seems like a huge amount of weight.

Isn't there some formula for what that would translate to on a maxed-out one-time lift?

If they were benching 405 on their fifth set, I would guess he can max out somewhere above 450, maybe even 500.

If he can put up 225 35 times after doing heavy bench and ending on 405, he's easily in the 500's. I'm going to guess somewehre around 550, but there is no way to tell for sure.

PP, you should find out who the strongest kids on the team are for bench, squat, etc. I think that would be interesting to see

So he can bench a quarter of a Mazda. Wow.
