Shaw’s TED Talk proposes Stanford FB can change the world

David Shaw’s TED Talk proposes Stanford football can change the world

"Of course, Stanford isn’t the only top-notch academic institution doing great things on the football field. It was a veritable revenge of the nerds in 2012. Consider:
•Northwestern: Won their first bowl game since 1948, went 10-3 and will likely be in the preseason top 25.
•Duke: Went to their first bowl game since 1994.
•Vanderbilt: Went 9-4, dominated N.C. State in the Music City Bowl and went to a bowl game in consecutive years for the first time in school history.
•Notre Dame: Was ranked number one in the polls while also holding the top student-athlete graduation rate."

"Secondly, you could have programs that have had continued football success without putting significant effort into making sure their players get worthwhile degrees, so what is their motivation to fix something that isn’t broken? There is also the issue with funding, as you find smaller schools without the resources for large academic support teams are often the ones lagging in certain metrics (like APR).

"It will take long-term success from programs that focus on academics and a sea change in top recruits looking for quality degrees in addition to quality football to change minds across the country, but it is a worthwhile pursuit. Challenges aside, this video is great publicity for Shaw, Stanford and every school putting in the effort to win in the classroom as well as the field."

I am a fan of all these universities. SMU needs to be on this list despite not being being a member of the Power 5. The video is worth 11 minutes of your time, IMHO.

Got about $5B we can add to the endowment?
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

higher NCAA academic requirements, progress toward degree requirements, scholarship limitations and NFL undergraduate draft have helped academic schools compete. SMU should always support higher NCAA minimum academic requirements

Imagine if the NCAA had much higher minimum academic standards and programs were penalized for low graduation rates.

Wouldn't that just mean the less scrupulous and academically rigorous programs will have really easy degrees for athletes, not changing anything?

Stanford, Northwestern and Vanderbilt are turning the negative into a positive and carved a niche, academically proficient or aspiring students, for themselves. Is there room for another, i.e. SMU? Or do we want to compete for the same students as the State School Factories?

Stanford and Vanderbilt have special classes and select majors for their athletes. I don't know about Northwestern as I have never investigated it. This is something ND brought back to their program about six years ago after dropping it for about a decade. Every wonder how ND fell off the track and suddenly got back in the game again? An outsider wouldn't know these things.

One of the main things that jumped out in that presentation was their national recruiting base. Why is our program only recruiting Texas? Those elite schools seem to have a national recruiting base.

Shocking Mexmustang's investigation of the Stanford academic model failed to note that Stanford has repeatedly had the highest SAT scores for football in Division 1A. They recruit EXACTLY ZERO marginal academic recruits

Example No. 1: Stanford turns down recruit with cumulative 3.9 GPA.

I can find more of these stories-it happens pretty consistently-I'd estimate Stanford's average SAT for football recruits approaches 150 -200 points higher than SMU. That's how we got Bryan McCann too.

Example No. 2 Stanford denies admission to recruit with 4.0 and 26 ACT. Each and every year there are multiple Stanford recruits that decommit in November through December when they do not pass the second admission barrier to admission to the university.

Example No. 3: recruit with self-reported 3.7 core GPA and 1080 SAT was denied admission to Stanford. It must be President Turner's fault. Nice investigation of the Stanford academic model there Mexmustang.

None of those schools are routinely admitting academically marginal recruits like June Jones has under President Turner-you know the guy you can't go 2 posts without vilifying because of "imaginary, invisible high admission standards. All of them are graduating their recruits at a much higher level than SMU. None of those schools support any of your criticism of SMU or President Turner. In fact, those schools reject every criticism you have of our academic model

Hint: when you don't know what you are talking about stop BSing us. I know where all the bodies are buried.

I don't know how it is today but it is my understanding that schools like Rice and Stanford would admit athletes with less academic standing if they would major in Physical Education. Not sure of the accuracy of that concept.
